About Wing:

Wing offers drone delivery as a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for last mile logistics. Consumer appetites for on-demand services are increasing, but current delivery methods are inefficient, costly, and contribute to road accidents and air pollution. Wing’s fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in minutes. We design, build, and operate our aircraft, and offer drone delivery services on two continents. Our technology is designed to be easy to integrate into existing delivery and logistics networks, offering a scalable drone delivery solution for a broad range of businesses. Wing is a part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, and our mission is to create the preferred means of delivery for the planet. If you're ready to do the greatest work of your life, come join us.

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Senior Motor Architect to join our Hardware team. This role is onsite based in Palo Alto, CA. You will spearhead the design, development, and scaling of our next-generation, high-performance electric propulsion systems. In this role, you will bridge the gap between cutting-edge electromagnetic theory and high-volume production, directly influencing the efficiency, power density, and reliability of our aircraft.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the design and development of Wing’s high-performance electric motors to optimize motor efficiency, power density, and electromechanical characteristics.
  • Define system-level requirements and specifications to enable integration with custom electronic speed controllers.
  • Evaluate, select materials and designs to improve performance while balancing cost and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing team and contract manufacturers to develop scalable production processes using Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team and contract manufacturers to develop manufacturing QA tests and procedures.
  • Drive the testing and validation, working with other engineers to verify motor performance.
  • Identify and implement emerging motor technologies and develop and maintain the product roadmap.

What You’ll Need:

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in the design, development, and testing of electric motors (such as brushless DC (BLDC) or permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM)) in a production-oriented environment, including transitioning designs from R&D to manufacturing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electromagnetics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Applied experience with electric motor topologies, magnetic circuit design, electromagnetics, and the integration of motors with Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs), motor drives, or high-power electronics.
  • Proficiency with electromagnetic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and thermal simulation tools (such as Ansys Maxwell, Motor-CAD, JMAG, or similar), as well as scripting/automation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for modeling and data analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of motor manufacturing and assembly processes (e.g., stator winding, stator laminations, potting/encapsulation, magnet retention, rotor balancing) and experience collaborating with suppliers to scale production.
  • Strong technical communication and presentation skills, with a proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally across mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and quality engineering teams.
