About us:

Aeva’s mission is building the next generation of products for sensing, perception for autonomous vehicles, and AI data centers. With its unique ability to measure instantaneous velocity for each pixel, long-range performance at high resolutions, while being free from LiDAR or sunlight interference, Aeva’s 4D LiDAR is built from the ground up at silicon photonics scale for mass-market applications.  Aeva’s Optical Connectivity leverages the Company’s proprietary high-power optical sources and silicon photonics technologies that have been developed and industrialized for demanding automotive and industrial applications.

Role Overview:

As a Senior Photonics Module Engineer you will be joining the photonics module engineering team at Aeva and developing advanced optical modules for the optical connectivity market.  You will be working cross-functionally to drive the bring up and deliver performance demonstrations of new optical modules.

What you'll be doing:

    • Work closely with a cross functional team to drive performance demonstrations and provide technical guidance for full module prototype designs
    • Manage core technical details of early photonics prototypes to ensure key results from concept phase translate through to full system demonstration
    • Develop a validation platform for silicon photonics based optical modules to demonstrate performance meeting product requirements
    • Work with CMs to set up test requirements to ensure assembled modules meet product specifications
    • Develop and maintain link budgets and system performance models
    • Perform FA and debugging for early prototypes

What you have:

    • 2+ years of post-PhD hands-on experience with fiber-coupled photonic systems, components, subassemblies, and/or modules
    • Excellent understanding of lasers, electrical components, and thermal/mechanical interfaces
    • Experience with laser characterization (e.g. LIV, SMSR, RIN, LW) and benchtop characterization equipment
    • Familiarity with system level modeling of optical links
    • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, or other photonics related field
    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with an ability to learn on the fly
    • Experience using python, MATLAB, JMP, R, or similar for modelling and data analysis

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
