Building a world-class company

At Vitalize, we’re building toward a future where hospital operations are safe, autonomous, fair, and cost-effective. Today, hospitals still run their most critical workflows (staffing, labor planning, capacity management) on spreadsheets, paper, and gut instinct. This creates massive waste, burnout, and poor patient outcomes. Vitalize replaces this with an intelligent operating system for the hospital workforce. We bring real-time decision support to clinical leaders, eliminate manual work, reduce unnecessary labor spend, and unlock the ability to see more patients across health systems.

About the role

Vitalize's ability to grow is directly correlated to how fast we can deploy. Every new customer requires configuration work that is today largely manual, bespoke, and engineering-dependent. That's the bottleneck — and this role exists to eliminate it.

As a Senior Product Engineer, you'll own the internal platform to deploy new health systems to Vitalize. That means building configuration infrastructure that can handle the full complexity and variance of enterprise health systems at scale — and the tooling that lets deployment and customer success operate without engineering in the loop at every step.

Time-to-Go-Live and headcount per deployment are direct inputs to revenue capacity — and to how far the product can reach. The goal is to make deployments as close to self-serve SaaS as possible: fast, repeatable, and scalable without linearly growing the team behind them. That's the business outcome this role owns.

Problems you'll work on
  • Building out the platform that handles the full complexity and variability of the workforce across enterprise health systems — sophisticated enough that deployment teams can configure, validate, and launch a new health system end-to-end without engineering involvement at any step.

  • Turning health system context into structured configuration. The deployment process starts with understanding a health system's dynamics, workflows, and constraints. You'll build the tooling that makes it fast to translate that context into a working, validated configuration.

  • Making integrations click-to-configure such that adding a new integration requires no engineer in the loop, just a deployment team working through a well-designed interface.

  • Self-service configuration portal that lets hospital IT teams build and validate digital twins of their workforce data — mapping org structures, job codes, cost centers, and scheduling rules — without Vitalize in the loop.

  • Reducing time-to-go-live by systematically replacing manual steps, tribal knowledge, and engineering dependencies with tooling that makes the deployment process fast, repeatable, and self-serve.

What you bring

You've shipped internal platforms that operators actually depend on — not just tools that work, but systems that replaced the way a team operates. You know what it takes to go from manual and bespoke to scalable and self-serve.

On the technical side:

  • 3+ years shipping production software in a product-focused engineering role, ideally in fast-moving B2B SaaS

  • Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, Postgres, with experience across the stack

  • You scope and deliver complex features end-to-end — from technical design through to production — without a lot of hand-holding

  • You raise the floor around you. You write code others can read, leave systems better than you found them, and give feedback that actually helps

  • Product instinct for internal users. You've sat with deployment teams or operators, watched how they actually work, and built tooling that replaced their manual processes rather than layered on top of them. You iterate on real workflows, not assumed ones.

  • Customer orientation. Our engineers meet with customers directly. You're comfortable in those conversations and you let what you hear shape what you build.

You might not be the right fit if:

  • You find it hard to stay motivated on work that isn't directly visible to customers or celebrated externally. The leverage here is real, but it lives in deployment metrics and operational efficiency rather than product surfaces

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Effect

  • Prior work building configuration systems, workflow builders, or deployment tooling for enterprise software

If these problems resonate, we want to hear from you — regardless of how cleanly your background maps to what's above.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
