Passionate about precision medicine and advancing the healthcare industry?

Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time.

About our Teams:

At Tempus, software and AI products are owned and developed by small, autonomous teams composed of Developers, Designers, Scientists, and Product Managers. You and your team set the goals, build the software, deploy the code, and contribute to a growing software platform that will make a lasting impact in the field of cancer research and treatment.

About the Role:
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer I to join the Transforms platform team and help build TransformHub — the service that makes it easy for teams across Tempus to develop, run, and operate batch processing jobs in a highly regulated, HIPAA-compliant environment, without needing to be infrastructure experts.

Transforms are our internal pattern for repeatable compute: structured, documented input goes in; contracted results come out. TransformHub abstracts, standardizes, and automates common and repetitive setup, infrastructure, security, and compliance work so Tempus scientists and engineers can focus on developing their products while the platform handles logging, monitoring, scheduling, resource management, scalability, and integrations.

As a Senior Software Engineer I on the team, you’ll also be driving the platform into its next chapter: extending beyond batch processing into interactive agents — a synchronous, streaming runtime where shipping a code-based chat agent is as simple as registering a repo and opening a PR, with identity, CI/CD, and governance built in — plus cross-system orchestration, parallel execution, and pipelines that compose Transforms into complex data systems.

Your work directly advances Tempus’s mission: AI solutions that empower clinicians to deliver care that helps patients live longer, healthier lives.
Why We’re Looking for You:

  • You’ve helped build a platform that bridges infrastructure and application teams — and you care as much about the developers using it as the systems underneath it.

  • You lead beyond your own work: technical analysis, design, and tradeoff discussions, not just feature execution.

  • You solve complex problems through data-driven, iterative development in distributed, microservice-oriented systems.

  • You’re excited to use AI-assisted development tools to move faster and build smarter.

  • You thrive in cross-team collaboration, troubleshooting roadblocks and communicating designs to a wide range of stakeholders.

  • You mentor other engineers and elevate engineering standards while continuously learning yourself.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive the architecture, development, and maintenance of TransformHub — our core compute platform — enabling scientists and engineers to develop, deploy, and operate their algorithms and models at scale with built-in security and governance.

  • Own and improve the platform’s developer experience, making it easier for teams to onboard, build, and operate their workloads.

  • Help build our new synchronous, streaming runtime for interactive agents, alongside the existing batch execution system.

  • Help teams migrate workloads from our legacy platform onto TransformHub and adopt new platform capabilities.

  • Design, implement, and test production backend services in TypeScript, delivering features that expand platform capabilities, connect new data sources, and improve scalability and performance.

  • Support the teams building on TransformHub — answering questions, troubleshooting development and production issues, and unblocking their work.

  • Work closely with Product Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to turn business requirements into technical designs.

  • Raise the engineering bar through mentoring, code reviews, and best practices for code quality, testing, and documentation.

  • Take operational responsibility for platform systems in production — monitoring reliability and performance, responding proactively to issues, and participating in business-hours on-call.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on platform engineering, data engineering, or backend web services.

  • Strong experience building and running containerized workloads (we use Docker) in production batch or distributed data systems on a public cloud (we use GCP — Cloud Batch and GKE).

  • Experience implementing security best practices for HIPAA and other sensitive data in production systems.

  • Experience designing and developing backend web services in a statically-typed language (TypeScript, Java, Rust, etc.); this role is primarily TypeScript and Node.js.

  • Demonstrated success translating complex business requirements into technical designs.

  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.

  • Familiarity with relational database design and application-level operations, including schema migrations.

  • Experience monitoring and operating production platform systems, including user support and/or on-call duties.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with GCP Cloud Batch and GKE, or their equivalents on other public clouds.

  • Interest in how AI agents are built and productionized — or in the platform problems underneath them, like streaming APIs, request/response runtimes, and safe deployment.

  • Experience building frontend enterprise applications (we use React).
