Job Summary

The Senior QA Engineer is responsible for defining and driving the quality strategy across one or more product teams or programmes. This role provides technical leadership in test planning, automation, release readiness, defect governance, CI/CD quality gates, and continuous improvement of QA practices.

The role partners closely with Engineering, Product, Architecture, Security, and Delivery stakeholders to ensure product quality is measured through clear evidence, risk-based testing, reliable automation, and objective release criteria. The Lead QA Engineer also guides QA Engineers, promotes shift-left quality practices, and helps improve engineering delivery confidence.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain the QA strategy, standards, and quality approach for assigned products or programmes.
  • Define risk-based test plans, release entry and exit criteria, and quality evidence required for release readiness.
  • Lead UI, API, integration, regression, exploratory, database, performance, security, and accessibility testing practices as appropriate.
  • Design, review, and govern test automation frameworks using modern tools and maintainable engineering patterns.
  • Establish CI/CD quality gates, automation reliability expectations, test reporting, and defect triage processes.
  • Partner with Engineering teams to improve testability, observability, quality controls, and early defect prevention.
  • Review open defects, unresolved risks, test coverage, and residual quality concerns before release decisions.
  • Mentor QA Engineers, support onboarding, improve capability, and help develop consistent QA practices across teams.
  • Use quality metrics and trends to identify systemic issues and recommend practical improvements.
  • Communicate quality status, risks, decisions, and recommendations clearly to technical and business stakeholders.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Typically 8+ years of experience in software testing, quality engineering, or a comparable technical QA role.
  • Strong hands-on experience with test automation for web applications, APIs, and integration points.
  • Experience with modern automation tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Postman, Newman, xUnit, or similar frameworks.
  • Good understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated quality gates, test reporting, and release validation.
  • Strong SQL and database validation skills, preferably with PostgreSQL, MySQL, or comparable relational databases.
  • Experience defining test strategies, test plans, defect processes, and release-readiness recommendations.
  • Ability to review requirements, identify risks, improve acceptance criteria, and influence quality earlier in the delivery lifecycle.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain quality risks and recommendations to engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring QA Engineers and supporting team capability development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
