A key focus of this position is to support Arcadis’ growing presence in the San Francisco Bay Area as wastewater agencies plan and implement the next generation of nutrient management improvements. The successful candidate will help shape Arcadis’ technical and client strategy related to the San Francisco Bay Nutrient Management Program and the implementation of nutrient reduction requirements across Bay Area wastewater utilities.  The position bridges technical leadership, project delivery and client engagement, helping translate emerging regulatory requirements and wastewater science into practical, implementable solutions for Bay Area utilities.

Role accountabilities:

As a Senior Wastewater Engineer, you will be responsible for identifying and positioning for upcoming nutrient planning, optimization and capital improvement programs in the Bay Area with support from Arcadis’ national wastewater practice and regional teams.  Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will lead projects across the full lifecycle, from strategic planning and facility assessments through design, construction, and operational optimization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a technical and strategic contributor to Arcadis’ San Francisco Bay Nutrient Management initiative, helping develop utility-specific strategies and a long-term project pipeline associated with nutrient compliance and treatment modernization.
  • Lead and support technical evaluations and designs involving biological nutrient removal, process intensification, treatment optimization, sidestream treatment, advanced process control, water reuse, and other approaches for reducing nutrient loads while managing energy, carbon and lifecycle costs.
  • Translate complex technical findings into clear engineering calculations, technical memoranda, planning reports, specifications, presentations, and actionable recommendations.
  • Support successful project delivery through scope, budget, schedule, resource, quality, and multidisciplinary team coordination.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with Bay Area wastewater utilities and regional organizations, contribute to proposals, and participate in appropriate technical forums, workshops and industry organizations.
  • Advise clients on regulatory compliance, infrastructure resilience, capacity planning, operational performance, and long-term asset management.
  • Mentor and collaborate with junior staff, sharing technical knowledge and supporting a strong, inclusive team environment.

Travel up to 40% may be required to support client meetings, workshops, site assessments, conferences, and project delivery activities throughout Northern California.

Key Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in wastewater planning, treatment systems, and municipal infrastructure projects, with a proven ability to lead complex technical assignments and build lasting client relationships. This individual will have experience in wastewater treatment processes, collection and conveyance systems, biosolids management, and water reuse along with knowledge of California wastewater regulations and permitting requirements. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong project management, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Experience mentoring junior staff, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and serving as a trusted advisor to municipal clients is highly valued.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications:
