Construction autonomy is one of the most complex challenges in applied AI, and at Caterpillar, advancements in physical AI, simulation, sensing, and edge computing are turning things that once felt impossible-intelligent machines operating in dynamic jobsites-into reality.
Role Definition:
The Simulation Quality Automation Engineer will develop and execute automated quality, integration, and validation solutions for simulation platform, scenario framework, rendering, digital twin, robotics, and autonomy workflows.
Working with the QA Lead and engineering teams, the role will build test software, regression suites, SIL and HIL workflows, metrics, reports, and release-quality evidence for simulation capabilities.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain automated test frameworks and reusable test utilities using Python, C++, or other relevant languages.
  • Create unit, integration, system, regression, performance, reliability, SIL, and HIL tests for simulation platform components and workflows.
  • Translate requirements, acceptance criteria, interfaces, and expected behaviors into clear test cases and automated validation.
  • Build regression suites covering scenario execution, runtime services, APIs, asset workflows, rendering outputs, sensors, and platform integrations.
  • Integrate automated simulation tests into CI/CD pipelines, build gates, packaging, artifact, and release workflows.
  • Develop test data, fixtures, mocks, stubs, environment configurations, and repeatable test environments.
  • Implement metrics, KPIs, pass/fail criteria, dashboards, reports, traceability, and automated evidence collection.
  • Support deterministic replay, results comparison, baseline management, defect reproduction, and root-cause analysis.
  • Perform system integration and exploratory testing across cloud, on-premises, GPU, SIL, and HIL environments.
  • Partner with software, scenario, rendering, digital twin, robotics, controls, and platform engineers to identify risks and improve testability.
  • Document test plans, procedures, results, defects, coverage, known limitations, and release recommendations.
  • Contribute to quality standards, code reviews, test reviews, and continuous improvement under the direction of the QA Lead.

Qualifications
  • Software development or test automation experience using Python, C++, C#, Java, or a comparable language.
  • Experience with automated testing, unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, CI/CD, and defect tracking.
  • Knowledge of verification and validation, requirements traceability, test design, metrics, and release-quality practices.
  • Exposure to SIL, HIL, simulation systems, robotics, digital twins, real-time software, or embedded integration is preferred.
  • Experience with Linux, Git, scripting, containers, logs, debugging, and test reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of APIs, distributed systems, cloud environments, performance testing, or observability is a plus.
  • Exposure to NVIDIA Omniverse, Isaac Sim, Unreal Engine, ROS2, Gazebo, AirSim, CARLA, or comparable simulation tools is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Typically 2+ years of software engineering, quality engineering, or test automation experience; relevant academic, research, internship, or project experience may be considered.

  • This position requires the candidate to work full-time at the Irving, TX office (Dallas)

Summary Pay Range:
$97,530.00 - $158,480.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
