The Software Development Engineer in Test role involves designing automation frameworks, collaborating with QA and engineers, and improving testing tools for autonomous vehicles.
Autonomous vehicles rely on some of the largest and most complex software systems ever deployed in a safety-critical environment. Building confidence in that software is one of the most exciting and consequential technical challenges of our time. The In-Vehicle Product Software QA team at Zoox plays a central role in meeting that challenge, with responsibilities spanning AI validation, large-scale test automation, and the development of internal testing tools.
As a Software Development Engineer in Test on this team, you will be a key driver of technical innovation in our test frameworks and infrastructure. You will design and build robust automation frameworks, tackle technically complex testing problems, and create novel tools that empower engineering teams across Zoox. Beyond individual contributions, you will act as a force multiplier—mentoring other test engineers and elevating the team’s overall test design, automation, and software engineering capabilities.
In this role, you will:
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable functional and test frameworks used across Zoox for integration and subsystem testing.
- Design, build, and evolve simulation tools leveraged by multiple teams throughout Zoox.
- Collaborate closely with QA, SDETs, and software engineers on cross-team initiatives to maintain and continuously improve Zoox’s end-to-end validation workflows.
- Lead feature-level testing by defining test strategy and plans, executing manual testing, and driving the transition to robust automation within Zoox’s integrated tooling ecosystem.
- Support and partner with users of our frameworks and tools, continuously refining them to improve reliability, usability, and overall engineering efficiency
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field.
- 4+ years of experience as a Software Development Engineer in Test with proven skills in writing automation frameworks for cloud applications from scratch.
- Experience building functional and performance automated tests for backend cloud applications.
- Strong proficiency with Python, Kotlin, and experience with tools like version control systems like Git, CI/CD pipelines.
- A self-starter who is capable of defining and implementing new tools and processes from start to finish.
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience in developing and maintaining simulation tools for testing purposes.
- Experience with HIL (Hardware In-the-Loop) test automation
