About OpenRouter

OpenRouter is the leading AI routing and infrastructure layer that enterprises use to access, manage, and optimize the best large language models across providers—without lock-in, capacity constraints, or unnecessary cost. We power the most advanced AI teams in the world by giving them the flexibility to move fast, scale confidently, and stay future-proof as models evolve.

As enterprise adoption of AI accelerates, OpenRouter sits at the center of how organizations operationalize LLMs across research, product, and production workloads.

About the Role

We're hiring a Software Engineer on our Developer Products team to build the surfaces external developers use to integrate with OpenRouter — our API, SDKs, docs, CLI, and other tools. Today, this work is owned by a small group, and the developer ecosystem around OpenRouter is growing quickly. Your work will also shape how agents interact with our platform and integrations.

This role is ideal for engineers who love autonomy, value collaboration, and have a track record of shipping software that works. You’ll play a critical role in shaping our product as we scale, helping expand our platform’s features, and delivering exceptional experiences for our users.

What You'll Do
  • Own and evolve our public REST API and the developer experience around it — from API design and ergonomics to versioning, errors, and rate-limiting behavior.

  • Build and maintain our client SDKs across TypeScript and Python, and lead the launches of our upcoming SDKs.

  • Ship our Agent SDK, expanding it into a surface for multi-step, agentic workloads built on OpenRouter.

  • Treat documentation, examples, and starter repos as products — instrument what developers and AI coding agents land on first, and make sure those are strong entry points to OpenRouter.

  • Make every developer-facing surface agent-friendly, given that AI coding agents are users of our APIs and SDKs.

  • Collaborate with our DevRel, Product, and Platform teams to identify gaps in the developer ecosystem and run with them end to end.

About You
  • 5+ years building external-facing developer products — APIs, SDKs, or developer platforms widely used by engineers.

  • Strong API and SDK design instincts; you've shipped libraries that developers integrate with and you have opinions about what makes them good.

  • Strong TypeScript skills; we're a TypeScript shop and TypeScript is widely used across the AI ecosystem.

  • AI-forward in your own workflow and interested in what agentic systems can do.

  • High agency and a bias toward action — you spot something missing in the developer ecosystem and ship it without waiting for a ticket.

  • Comfortable owning a product line at a small company where boundaries between teams are fluid.

  • Strong written communication; docs, changelogs, and SDK reference material are part of the job.

  • Pragmatic about tradeoffs between speed and simplicity.

Bonus Points
  • Prior experience at developer-centric companies

  • Hands-on experience designing or maintaining agent SDKs or other agentic developer tooling.

  • Existing user of OpenRouter, contributions to open-source projects, or side projects in the AI tooling space.

The base salary for this full-time position in the United States, spanning multiple internal levels depending on qualifications, ranges between $215,000 to $285,000 plus benefits & equity. Compensation for internationally based candidates will vary to reflect local market conditions.

If you don't think you meet all of the criteria below but still are interested in the job, please apply. Nobody checks every box, and we're looking for someone who is excited to join the team.
