We're Hiring: Sr Software Engineer, Back-End / Data

We're looking for a Sr Software Engineer with strong data engineering expertise to join our growing product and engineering team. This is a hands-on role where you'll design, build, and scale features across our platform while serving as a data engineering subject matter expert.

You'll own critical product features, build data-driven experiences that surface insights to business stakeholders, and guide the team on data architecture and ingestion patterns, as well as not hesitating to get in the weeds to bring things across the line. One example of this is data wrangling, while this is not a primary focus, it is also not out of scope as in some cases this may be necessary for successful project completion.

This role is perfect for someone who thrives in fast-moving, high-growth environments, loves building elegant solutions that transform raw data into actionable insights, and wants to see their work make an impact on the future of higher education.

What You'll Own

🔹 Backend Product Development

  • Design, build, and maintain features across the stack using TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.

  • Architect and implement scalable APIs, real-time data processing, and AI-driven features that power student-university interactions.

  • Own end-to-end feature development from technical design through implementation, testing, and deployment.

  • Build in-product experiences that expose insights and analytics to university stakeholders, enabling data-driven decision making.

🔹 Data Engineering & Analytics

  • Design and build ETL pipelines and data transformation workflows that power analytics and reporting.

  • Create and maintain Looker dashboards in collaboration with business stakeholders, translating requirements into actionable visualizations.

  • Build data models and aggregation layers that enable efficient querying and real-time analytics.

  • Implement data validation, change management, quality checks, and monitoring to ensure data integrity across systems.

🔹 Data Architecture & Infrastructure

  • Serve as the data engineering SME for the engineering team, providing guidance on data architecture decisions and best practices.

  • Design and review data ingestion patterns from customer systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and data quality.

  • Optimize database schemas, queries, and indexing strategies for performance at scale.

  • Contribute to technical decision-making around data storage, processing frameworks, and analytics tooling.

🔹 Collaboration & Technical Leadership

  • Partner with product, engineering, and business teams to understand analytics requirements and deliver data-driven features.

  • Work with Solutions Engineering and Customer Success to design data integrations and reporting for enterprise customers.

  • Mentor team members on data modeling, pipeline development, and analytics best practices.

  • Support data infrastructure decisions that enable AI/ML capabilities and advanced analytics.

  • Assist other teams in improving their data structures along with migration and backfill strategies for compliance as well as better compatibility with other systems, DWH and Analytics.

You Might Be a Fit If…

✅ You bring 5-8 years of back-end software development experience with a strong track record in data engineering, analytics, and building data-driven products.

✅ You have deep expertise with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB), including query optimization, schema design, and building scalable data architectures that handle high-volume data ingestion.

✅ You can translate business requirements into technical solutions, building in-product analytics experiences and dashboards that empower stakeholders to make data-driven decisions.

✅ You have the persistence and patience to advocate for the best long term solutions while still being very attentive of business needs and timelines.

✅ You're a self-starter with a data-first mindset who thrives in fast-moving environments, loves building products, and can effectively guide teams on data architecture through collaboration and technical leadership (bonus points for EdTech or startup experience).
