About the Role

Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous technology ecosystem. We're building out a high-velocity team of multidisciplinary experts to turn real-world operations into high-quality data for our autonomous partners. This team is focused on the hardest problem in AV today: unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomy is now a data race—and Uber has an edge: We collect rare, real-world driving data at a scale and capital efficiency no one else can match.

Our AV Labs Hardware team is pioneering the next-generation E/E architecture for our cutting-edge L4 data collection vehicle fleet. As a Staff Electrical Engineer, you will provide deep technical leadership in the design, development, integration, and validation of complex electrical hardware supporting high-performance compute, storage, sensors, networking, power distribution, and vehicle interfaces.

You will own technically challenging hardware designs from concept through production, solve complex electrical problems across board and system boundaries, and establish design practices that enable robust and scalable hardware development. This is a highly hands-on technical leadership role where you will remain deeply involved in circuit design, schematic and PCB reviews, prototype bring-up, laboratory characterization, debugging, and design validation while mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar across the hardware team.

What You Will Do
  1. Lead Electrical Architecture & Hardware Design: Architect and develop complex PCB and electrical subsystem designs for high-performance compute, storage, sensor interfaces, networking, power distribution, and vehicle electronics. Own critical design decisions, component selection, circuit analysis, schematic development, and PCB design reviews from concept through production release.
  2. Drive Power, High-Speed & SI/PI Design: Lead technically challenging designs involving high-current and multi-rail power architectures, high-speed digital interfaces, Signal Integrity (SI), Power Integrity (PI), grounding, and EMI/EMC. Perform and guide design analysis, simulation, component derating, tolerance analysis, and worst-case analysis to ensure robust performance across automotive operating conditions.
  3. Lead Hardware Bring-Up, Debug & Validation: Lead bring-up and characterization of complex prototype hardware and develop validation strategies for critical designs. Drive root-cause analysis of difficult circuit, power, signal integrity, EMI/EMC, thermal, and system-level failures using advanced laboratory measurement and debugging techniques.
  4. Drive Cross-Functional Vehicle Integration: Partner with cross functional hardware, firmware and software teams to define interfaces and resolve system-level dependencies. Drive technical alignment across teams and ensure electrical hardware and interfaces meet vehicle performance, reliability, serviceability, and integration requirements.
  5. Lead Technical Execution & Production Readiness: Provide technical leadership from prototype through production release, including architecture reviews, design reviews, component and supplier strategy, DFM/DFA, DFMEA, engineering changes, and validation readiness. Mentor engineers, raise the technical bar for the team, and partner with suppliers and manufacturing teams to deliver robust, scalable hardware.
Basic Qualifications
  1. Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 8+ years of professional experience designing and developing complex electrical hardware. Demonstrated track record of independently leading technically challenging board-level or electrical subsystem designs from concept through prototype, validation, and production.
  2. Electrical Hardware Design Expertise: Deep understanding of analog, digital, and power electronics with extensive hands-on experience in schematic design, component selection, PCB development, and hardware validation. Strong experience designing complex power architectures, DC/DC converters, power distribution and protection circuits, and high-speed digital interfaces.
  3. Technical Leadership & Hardware Development: Deep hands-on expertise in hardware bring-up, electrical characterization, and root-cause analysis using oscilloscopes, electronic loads, power supplies, current and differential probes, network analyzers, and other advanced laboratory equipment. Proven ability to solve complex multidisciplinary hardware problems and provide technical direction and mentorship to other engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Advanced Compute & Automotive Hardware: Proven experience developing high-performance compute, storage, sensor, networking, or power electronics hardware for autonomous vehicles, automotive, robotics, aerospace, or other demanding embedded systems. Experience with automotive 12 V and/or 48 V power architectures, automotive-grade components, transient protection, and harsh electrical environments.
  2. Power, High-Speed, SI/PI & EMI/EMC Expertise: Extensive experience with high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, Automotive Ethernet, GMSL/FPD-Link, USB, DDR, or similar technologies. Strong expertise in Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, stack-up and PCB routing strategy, grounding, shielding, filtering, and board/system-level EMI/EMC mitigation.
  3. Hardware Validation & Reliability: Experience defining and executing comprehensive Design Validation Plans covering electrical performance, power integrity, thermal performance, fault behavior, high-speed interfaces, environmental conditions, and EMI/EMC. Familiarity with automotive standards and test methods such as CISPR 25, ISO 16750, LV124, and related standards, along with DFMEA, DFM/DFA, component derating, tolerance analysis, and worst-case circuit analysis.
  4. Technical Leadership & Product Execution: Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, lead critical hardware design reviews, and establish engineering methodologies and best practices. Experience working with semiconductor vendors, PCB/PCBA suppliers, and manufacturing partners to deliver robust, production-ready hardware.
