The Team
SBS (Spatial Business Systems), an Enverus company, builds intelligent design solutions that help utility, telecom, and AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) organizations get more value from their investments in utility networks, GIS, CAD, and enterprise systems. SBS tools support engineers designing substations, transmission, and distribution networks where correctness, performance, and domain accuracy are non-negotiable.
As part of Enverus - a leading energy-focused SaaS and data analytics company - SBS combines deep utility engineering expertise with modern software engineering to deliver tools that materially improve design quality, productivity, and safety. SBS provides a rewarding environment promoting flexibility, innovation, and commitment, and encourages leadership and achievement so employees can make a real difference.
SBS, an Enverus company, is seeking a Staff Software Developer/Engineer to join our Distribution Tools team, reporting to Matthew Rickard, Director of Software Development.
The Distribution Tools team builds and maintains SBS's desktop design and engineering tools, focused on the electric and gas distribution market. The Staff Software Developer/Engineer is a senior technical leader who sets direction for complex, cross-cutting work on the platform, shapes architecture across the team's product line, and multiplies the impact of the engineers around them through mentorship and review.
Performance Objectives
  • Own delivery of the most complex and highest-risk features and enhancements, from requirements through production.
  • Translate ambiguous product needs into sound technical plans with clear milestones and risk assessment.
  • Lead performance, correctness, and reliability work where engineering accuracy for utility design is non-negotiable.
  • Use AI coding assistants daily, and set the standard for reviewing, testing, and owning AI-generated code before it ships.
  • Mentor senior, mid-level, and early-career engineers on design, code quality, and engineering judgment.
  • Lead peer design and code reviews, raising the quality bar across the team.
  • Partner with the delivery organization on customer-specific configuration, favoring reusable patterns over one-off customizations.
  • Help define coding standards, CI/CD practices, and AI-assisted development guidelines for the Distribution Tools group.
  • Work with product management, QA, and delivery to shape roadmaps and estimate scope.
  • Represent the Distribution Tools team in cross-team architecture discussions.
  • Participate in Scrum sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives, and contribute to program-level planning.

Competitive Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including sustained technical leadership on complex systems.
  • Demonstrated record of designing and shipping large desktop and/or service-based applications.
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers, through formal or informal roles.
  • Strong communication skills, including writing design documents and presenting trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Desire to work on software used by utilities and energy infrastructure organizations.
  • Experience defining AI-assisted development practices for an engineering team.

Preferred Experience
  • Background in electric or gas distribution design, or CAD-based engineering tools.
  • Hands-on experience with GIS platforms (ArcGIS, GE SmallWorld, Intergraph G/Technology) or EAM systems (SAP, IBM Maximo).
