The Opportunity

Join the team transforming how millions of people access musculoskeletal care by building the engine that powers our growth. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Growth Engineering team, you will not just build features; you will architect the scalable, event-driven backend systems that integrate Hinge Health with major hospital systems and health plans. You will be a technical leader in a cloud-native environment, solving complex integration challenges to expand our ecosystem and deliver life-changing treatments to members worldwide.

What You'll Accomplish

  • In your first 3 months: You will dive into our backend stack (Python, TypeScript, AWS) and audit our current integration architecture. You will build high-trust relationships with product managers and frontend partners, and ship your first set of secure, scalable features to support new growth initiatives.

  • In your first 6 months: You will take ownership of leading architectural discussions for complex, integration-heavy systems. You will design and implement end-to-end solutions using Apache Kafka and DynamoDB, mentor junior engineers to raise the technical bar, and champion improvements in system observability using Datadog and Sentry.

  • In your first 12 months: You will act as a primary owner for the long-term technical strategy of our growth platform. You will have optimized our backend services for massive scale, established durable architectural patterns that multiply the team's velocity, and played a pivotal role in delivering foundational improvements that help us reach 20+ million lives.

Who You Are

  • A "Learn-it-all": You leverage AI tools and emerging trends to drive efficiency and quality. You don't just stick to what you know; you constantly explore new ways to solve hard problems in a cloud-native environment.

  • A Trust Builder: You effectively bridge the gap between backend complexity and frontend experience. You collaborate seamlessly with frontend engineers to define clear API contracts and ensure a cohesive end-to-end user journey.

  • Resilient: You thrive in a dynamic, continuous deployment culture. You take owner-operator pride in your code, proactively identifying scaling bottlenecks and delivering safe, foundational improvements even when facing ambiguity.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical degree.

  • At minimum, 4+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of building scalable backend systems and microservices.

  • 4+ years of experience building event-driven systems, AWS services (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, DynamoDB) and cloud architecture.

  • Strong experience with backend technologies (e.g., Node.js/TypeScript, Python, relational and non-relational databases, messaging/streaming systems).

  • Collaboration skills: Experience collaborating with or contributing to web or mobile frontends (understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React, Vue.js, or Angular).

  • AI-Native: Hands-on experience with generative AI tools to accelerate development workflows, improve code quality, and streamline debugging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in TypeScript, NestJS, GraphQL, Node.js, relational and non-relational databases, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Redis.

  • Integration Expert: Experience designing and evolving integration-heavy systems (e.g., with hospital systems, health plans, or other external partners).

  • Frontend Fluency: Experience with mobile or web frontend development (e.g., React Native, React) sufficient to meaningfully collaborate on end-to-end feature delivery.

  • Observability Champion: Experience with tools such as Datadog (performance monitoring) and Sentry (error tracking).

  • System Design: Strong understanding of system design principles, microservices architecture, and CI/CD pipelines.
