STAFF SOFTWARE ENGINEER, INFRASTRUCTURE

The Infrastructure team owns the reliability and performance of the platform behind every Current product, from the live application and managed database services to the data stores, pipelines and internal tooling our members and engineers rely on. As a Staff engineer with a backend focus, you will own infrastructure domains that span several squads and work closely with frontend and backend engineers across the company. You will set technical direction and lead the work that keeps the platform fast, resilient and secure.
This is a senior individual contributor role that has a salary range of $215,000 - $295,000. You will have broad influence across engineering without managing a team.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Own the stability and performance of our core services and data stores, a domain that spans several squads
  • Lead our regional resilience work, including multi-region operation and failover
  • Lead application performance work with frontend and backend engineers: find bottlenecks across services, data stores and the network, and fix them
  • Plan and run service and database migrations with zero downtime
  • Own the reliability and performance of the data pipelines that move production data between services and data stores
  • Improve the shared tooling engineers use to build, deploy and operate services, including agentic tooling that makes this work faster and safer
  • Lead response to infrastructure incidents and make sure postmortem actions get done
  • Set technical direction through design reviews and explain tradeoffs clearly to engineers, product partners and leadership
  • Raise the quality of other engineers' work through design review, pairing and mentoring
  • Partner with Security and Compliance to meet the standards of a regulated financial services company

ABOUT YOU:

  • 8+ years of software or infrastructure engineering with a backend focus, including at least 3 years owning production infrastructure that multiple teams depend on
  • You have already led regional resilience projects (multi-region, failover or disaster recovery) and application performance projects in production
  • You have built and run Java backend services and are comfortable working in Java services and shared libraries
  • MongoDB in production at scale: performance tuning, indexing, replication, capacity planning and upgrades
  • Cloud operations on Kubernetes: running production clusters, upgrades, autoscaling and multi-cluster setups. We run GKE, but deep experience on another cloud is welcome
  • Experience deploying Infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform
  • You use observability tools (we use Datadog) for metrics, tracing, logging and alerting, and you have used them to lead incident response
  • Building or operating data pipelines that move production data
  • Hands-on experience with agentic tooling, such as AI coding agents or MCP servers
  • Strong communication skills. You write clear RFCs and lead cross-team decisions through influence rather than authority

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Application profiling, such as JVM profiling, flame graphs or continuous profiling
  • Networking within the cloud: VPC design, private connectivity, load balancing, DNS and service mesh
  • Experience in fintech or regulated financial services, such as SOC 2 or PCI DSS compliance
  • Cloud security: IAM, workload identity, network policies, pod security and secrets management
  • A cloud or Kubernetes certification, such as Google Professional Cloud Architect, AWS Solutions Architect or CKA
  • Experience with Google Cloud, including GKE

BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary
  • Meaningful equity in the form of stock options
  • 401(k) plan
  • Discretionary performance bonus program
  • Biannual performance reviews
  • Medical, Dental and Vision premiums covered at 100% for you and your dependents
  • Flexible time off and paid holidays
  • Generous parental leave policy
