About The RoleWe’re looking for a staff engineer to help lead the strategic supply team. The strategic supply team works on helping The RealReal get as much inventory as possible as quickly as possible. We have to work on all parts of the stack technology-wise but also touch every part of TRR’s processes. We have to solve unique challenges daily to support new vendors and taxons with depth in sku. We work with ruby on rails and elixir on the backend and mostly with react/nextjs on the frontend.

What You Get To Do Every Day
  • Design and deliver large, scalable systems that power critical parts of our luxury resale marketplace, from inventory intake and lifecycle management to buyer discovery, checkout, and financial workflows.

  • Lead complex technical initiatives end-to-end, including architectural evolution, platform modernization, event-driven adoption, and AI enablement efforts.

  • Partner closely with Engineering Managers and Product leaders to translate ambiguous business problems into pragmatic, high-quality technical solutions with clear tradeoffs.

  • Influence architecture beyond your immediate team by collaborating across squads, reviewing cross-team proposals, and driving alignment on scalable patterns and standards.

  • Write and review production code regularly, setting a high bar for quality, simplicity, performance, and maintainability.

  • Act as a technical leader during high-impact incidents, helping diagnose systemic issues and guiding long-term reliability improvements.

  • Elevate developer productivity by improving tooling, workflows, and engineering practices, and by championing thoughtful adoption of AI and LLM-powered development tools.

  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design feedback, deep technical reviews, and example-driven leadership.

What You Bring To The Role

Minimum Requirements:

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience operating at a senior or staff level.

  • Proven ability to independently design and deliver large, scalable systems end-to-end in distributed, cloud native environments.

  • Demonstrated execution leadership on complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives such as platform modernization, architectural evolution, or major migrations.

  • Strong systems design expertise, including data modeling, API design, event-driven architectures, and performance optimization.

  • Experience reviewing production code at scale and setting a high technical bar for quality, simplicity, and maintainability.

  • Ability to influence technical direction beyond your immediate team, collaborating across squads to drive alignment on architecture and standards.

  • Hands-on experience diagnosing and resolving high-impact production issues, with a strong understanding of observability and reliability practices.

  • Experience leading the adoption of AI and LLM-powered development workflows and using them to meaningfully improve developer productivity.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable directions.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience working on marketplace platforms, inventory lifecycle systems, pricing systems, or financial workflows where correctness and operational precision are critical.

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails and event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka.

  • Experience in environments with compliance or financial control requirements.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Open Source Software contributions
