Position: Software Engineer

This position is imperative in operating and maintaining all network systems and servers. This person is one of the members of a five (5) person team. This is a very highly secure system and a background check will be required of anyone coming on board. 

Systems Engineer

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience providing network design, configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting for a medium to large network environment or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

• Hands on experience with Cisco and Palo Alto Networks networking devices and Cisco IOS.

• Experience managing MPLS WAN environment.

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Server Operating Systems and Microsoft Active Directory architecture. 

• Technical project management experience in 24x7 production environments.

Education:  

• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the following disciplines, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems Management, or a related discipline.

• Cisco CCNA certification.

• Microsoft MCSA certification.

Preferred Skills

• CCNP, CCNP Security, and CCDP certification.

• MCSE: Server Infrastructure certification.

• PMP certification.

• Knowledge of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies.

• Working knowledge of Palo Alto Network Firewalls.

Systems Engineer

Job Description

Under the direction of the Information Technology (IT) Manager, the Systems Engineer will provide network design, systems administration, and maintenance for the Bay Area Express Lanes backhaul network infrastructure. The Systems Engineer will play a key role in taking the network to the next level through a number of projects including participation in network and systems architecture design, implementation and eventual maintenance of BAIFA’s next generation network communications infrastructure. Focus will be on enhancing systems and network capacity, redundancy, and high availability, implementation of network and application security best practices and technologies, adding traffic shaping (CoS/QoS) to allow for high bandwidth application while maintaining performance for critical applications, and upgrades of firewalls, routers, and switches. Additionally, the Systems Engineer will serve as a technical advisor for other agency ITS projects and networks.

Systems Engineer responsibilities and requirements include:

• Support design, implementation and maintenance of highly available, multi-use, and redundant metropolitan area network (MAN) infrastructure utilizing fiber optics, copper, wireless, and leased-line services.  

• Maintain network security policies and have knowledge of current security best practices and tools for a highly secure and available production environment.

• Administration of Cisco routers, switches, and firewalls, network monitoring tools, and anti-spam appliances.

• Administration of Windows Server 2008 and 2012 systems and core applications, including Active Directory, Domain Name System (DNS), and Network Policy Server. 

• Configuration of VLANs, ACLs, Class of Service (CoS), Quality of Service (QoS), and network protocols (OSPF, BGP, HSRP) to assure WAN availability, optimal throughput, traffic prioritization, and network security in a high availability environment.

• Administration of network and system monitoring tools including Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor, Cisco LiveAction, and Microsoft System Center applications. 

• Network systems planning and diagramming (Visio) for documentation. 

• Thorough knowledge of IOS, Cisco configuration utilities (ASDM); network monitoring software, and Cisco Smartnet.

• Use of protocol analyzers to identify and resolve network issues and monitor network usage trends.

• Experience with LAN hardware including patch panels, Fiber Optic, Cat5e and Cat 6 wiring. 

• Support and maintain Cisco and Palo Alto Network VPN remote access systems.

• Work with telecom providers to manage existing telecommunication circuits, troubleshoot outages, and install service upgrades.

• Experience with formal change management process including development of change management plan for production upgrades.
