Execute customer-driven NGS workflows, including library preparation, target enrichment, sequencing, sample processing, and molecular biology assays. Operate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot workflow issues, analyze experimental data, maintain detailed records, and ensure ISO 13485 and internal quality compliance. Coordinate multiple projects and samples while collaborating with Sales, R&D, Field Applications, and Customer Support teams to meet production schedules and customer timelines.
Reporting to the Director, Technical Sales & Field Application Scientists, the Technical Project Manager will lead all aspects of project management, coordination, and implementation relative to the NGS Services Lab and related businesses of Twist Bioscience. This role owns execution from customer intake through delivery, driving scalability, process optimization, and cross-functional alignment across a technically complex, high-throughput service environment.
The role manages the full range of communications required to facilitate each project, including customers, sales & field application support, Twist customer service, Twist legal, and the Twist product management group — encompassing non-disclosure agreements, customer quotes, purchase orders, and statements of work.
What You'll Be DoingProject Leadership for the NGS Service and Applications LabIntake, Scoping & Quoting- Serve as the technical and operational lead during project intake, translating customer needs into clearly scoped, executable NGS service programs (DNA, RNA, methylation, long-read)
- Own project definition and intake, including:
- Customer objectives — translate complex customer goals into optimized sequencing strategies and workflows
- Scope, assumptions, and constraints
- Workflow design and feasibility
- Cost, timelines, dependencies, and deliverables
- Success criteria aligned to customer outcomes
- Partner with Sales and FAS to shape opportunities early, including:
- Defining the right assay or sequencing approach
- Identifying risks, tradeoffs, and alternative strategies
- Setting realistic expectations with customers
- Prepare and distribute quotes for NGS service projects; maintain an up-to-date, accessible database of issued quotations, NDAs, purchase orders, and statements of work
- Own end-to-end project coordination following intake through final delivery, ensuring continuity between scoping, lab execution, and data delivery
- Serve as the central coordination hub across all functions, including: Lab Operations, Bioinformatics, Customer-facing teams (Sales / FAS), and the Customers
- Drive regular project syncs with the lab manager (daily/weekly) to track progress vs. timeline, identify risks, and ensure alignment across teams
- Serve as the primary point of contact for project updates post-intake
- Establish and maintain clear communication cadence, including: status updates, timeline changes, data delivery, and invoicing
- Manage customer expectations proactively, especially around: turnaround time (TAT), data quality, and scope changes or technical challenges
- Maintain real-time visibility of all active projects, including a transparent, accessible work-in-progress (WIP) list, in coordination with the lab team
- Maintain accurate, timely records across all systems to enable up-to-date reporting on quotes issued, orders placed, orders in progress, and orders shipped
- Follow applicable regulatory and quality requirements, including ISO 13485, for the service lab
- Provide technical and project leadership to coordinators and cross-functional partners supporting the NGS service lab
- Identify and drive process optimization and scalability improvements across the intake-to-delivery lifecycle
- Support ad hoc strategic projects as required
- PhD in Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related Life Science field
- 5+ years of relevant experience utilizing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies, including project or program management experience, with demonstrated experience in a customer-facing role
- Expert understanding of NGS workflows (DNA, RNA, methylation, long-read) and the customer workflows the associated service offerings address
- Proven track record managing complex, technical projects from intake through delivery that meet customer expectations
- Proven ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams, and to work effectively with customers, internal operations, and sales teams
- Outstanding leadership, teamwork, and communication skills
- Hands-on, high-energy, positive attitude with a can-do approach that gets it done
- Highly motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to work under pressure and a strong sense of urgency
- Strong organizational skills and excellent problem-solving abilities
- Must be able to work outside of regular work hours / a flexible schedule as needed
The base cash compensation for this California-based role is below. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for bonus, equity, and a generous benefits package. Final compensation amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location and may vary from the amount listed above. Compensation may be different in other locations.
