This is Adyen

Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft - making us the financial technology platform of choice. At Adyen, everything we do is engineered for ambition.

For our teams, we create an environment with opportunities for our people to succeed, backed by the culture and support to ensure they are enabled to truly own their careers. We are motivated individuals who tackle unique technical challenges at scale and solve them as a team. Together, we deliver innovative and ethical solutions that help businesses achieve their ambitions faster.

The Role

Our Docs Excellence team is looking for a systems-minded Technical Writer to join us in Chicago. This isn't a traditional writing role: we treat technical content as structured, living knowledge rather than static pages, and you'll operate as equal parts System Builder and Technical Curator.

You'll step into an established documentation practice: existing style guidelines, a domain-based team structure, and a workflow that blends traditional technical writing with AI-assisted tooling, and you'll help evolve it further as a Knowledge Architect. As System Builder, you'll design the metadata schemas, ontology, and context rules that guide automated first-pass content generation. As Technical Curator, you'll apply exceptional editorial judgment to review, fact-check, and refine that output into precise, trustworthy, and well-structured developer documentation.

What You'll Do

  • Design and maintain metadata schemas (YAML front matter), ontology, and rules that support automated, first-pass content generation workflows.
  • Review, edit, and fact-check auto-generated content and code snippets for technical accuracy, edge cases, and voice.
  • Author and refine API reference guides, integration workflows, and conceptual docs in a docs-as-code environment (Git, Markdown).
  • Partner with Product Managers, Engineers, Support, and Implementation Managers to capture platform logic and validate merchant integration flows.
  • Structure documentation so it works for two audiences at once: human developers navigating integrations, and AI systems parsing context.

Who You Are

  • 3+ years documenting complex technical spaces, including APIs, SDKs, or developer platforms, with a portfolio that shows real writing and editing craft.
  • Comfortable thinking beyond the page: you can design ontologies, metadata schemas, and structured information models.
  • A high-judgment editor who can spot hallucinations, inaccuracies, or structural gaps in automated drafts.
  • Fully fluent in Git, Markdown, and docs-as-code toolchains.
  • A practical, hands-on user of AI tools and LLMs to gather context and streamline documentation work.
  • Someone who asks why before executing. We value critical thinking and problem-solving as much as craft.
  • Comfortable managing multiple stakeholders and adapting to a fast-moving, evolving environment.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Postman, VS Code, or similar tools.
  • Basic ability to read code snippets (Java, Python, TypeScript) to verify API logic.

Team & Location
You'll join a global community of 15 writers, supported by 2 engineering teams and a senior PM across Amsterdam, Madrid, and Chicago. This role is based in our Chicago office; we operate a hybrid model (3 days/week in office).
