Lead the end-to-end UX and UI design of Riverside’s Reach assessment platform, a 0-to-1 product serving students, educators, and administrators. The role partners with Product, Engineering, Psychometrics, and Content teams.

As the UX/UI Designer, Reach, you will lead the end-to-end design of Riverside's Reach platform and the next generation of our portfolio assessments, including CogAT and the Iowa Assessments, building the user experience from the ground up alongside Engineering, Product, and Psychometrics partners. You'll define how students, educators, and administrators interact with a platform that doesn't exist yet, then continue to own and evolve that experience once Reach is live.

This is a 0-to-1 build. There is no existing product to iterate on, so you'll establish the UX framework, interaction patterns, and design system from scratch rather than improving what's already there. You'll report to the Product Director, and partner closely with Engineering, Product Management, Psychometrics, and Content teams to bring the platform to market, then to support and expand post-launch.

Role Summary and Responsibilities

UX Strategy, Research & Interaction Design

  • Own end-to-end UX strategy for Reach, defining personas, journey maps, and information architecture from a blank slate, with no legacy patterns to inherit or design around
  • Lead user research and discovery (interviews, usability testing, workflow analysis) with students, educators, and administrators and internal stakeholders, to validate assumptions before design work begins
  • Translate research findings into user flows, task flows, and interaction models that hold up across student, educator, and administrator experiences
  • Build wireframes and interactive prototypes to test concepts with users and stakeholders before committing to high-fidelity design
  • Define the information architecture and navigation model for a multi-role assessment platform, so each user type can find what they need without friction
  • Turn assessment data into clear, actionable displays (score reports, dashboards, configuration screens) that educators can use to make decisions in seconds, not minutes or hours.
  • Design the onboarding and in-product guidance experience for educators and administrators
  • Establish and track UX success metrics (task success, usability scores). Use metrics to help inform product roadmap for new features and improved useability.

Visual & UI Design

  • Build and maintain a scalable design system and component library from day one, so design and engineering share a single source of truth as the platform grows
  • Own high-fidelity visual design for every screen (typography, spacing, color, real content) once flows are validated
  • Design accessible, responsive UI compliant with WCAG standards, built in from the start rather than retrofitted later
  • Design print and PDF layouts for generated reports and assessment materials
  • Partner with Engineering on design specs and developer handoff, and conduct design QA to ensure shipped work matches intent

Ongoing Ownership

  • Continue to support, iterate, and expand the Reach design system and UX as new assessments and features are added post-launch

RequirementsMust-Have Qualifications
  • 4-7 years of experience in product, UX, or UI design, with meaningful depth in both user experience and visual/interaction design
  • Proven experience as a founding or lead designer on a 0-to-1 or greenfield build, defining UX frameworks, interaction patterns, and design systems from scratch, not just refining an existing product
  • Strong foundation in UX research methods (interviews, usability testing, surveys), with the ability to translate findings into personas, journey maps, and actionable specs
  • Experience building and maintaining a design system or component library from the ground up
  • Proficiency in Figma (or comparable) for flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes, from low to high fidelity
  • Experience designing for multi-role, multi-stakeholder platforms and complex, data-heavy interfaces (dashboards, score reports)
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and responsive design principles
  • Comfortable operating with a high degree of ambiguity and limited existing structure
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in K-12 education, assessment, or clinical/behavioral health products
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted design or product workflows
  • HTML/CSS or React/Next.js familiarity, for closer engineering collaboration
  • Experience mentoring designers or setting design standards adopted across multiple product teams
Physical Requirements
  • Remote
  • Occasional travel for off-site team meetings or conferences
  • May require stationary positions, sitting or standing, for extended periods

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
