About this role

Your team

Technology & Development Operations (TDO) sits within Platform & Ecosystem Engineering, part of the firm’s Platform Enablement organization. Platform Enablement is a horizontal capability focused on scaling execution, modernizing foundational platforms, and accelerating delivery across Business Operations and Client Services in close partnership with Aladdin Engineering.

TDO operates at the intersection of business process, technology, and delivery. We work directly with operational teams to identify workflow challenges, translate business needs into technical solutions, and build pragmatic tools and automations that improve scale, resilience, and efficiency across core operating platforms.

Your role and impact

As an Associate, Application Engineer, you will design, develop, and deliver technical solutions that address workflow challenges across Business Operations and Client Services. You will combine software development with business analysis, developing a strong understanding of operational processes and translating business needs into practical, maintainable solutions.

This role offers the opportunity to apply programming, data, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to real operational challenges. You will own work through delivery while collaborating across business and technology teams to help ensure solutions are resilient, supportable, and aligned with broader platform standards.

Your responsibilities

In every role at BlackRock, you'll be expected to apply sound judgement and critical thinking to solve complex problems, adapt as the business evolves, and combine the curiosity to explore new approaches and technologies with the rigor to challenge the results. The scope of this role also includes the following responsibilities:

  • Design, build, test, and maintain targeted technical solutions that address workflow inefficiencies, operational risks, and scaling challenges.
  • Develop production-minded tools, automations, data-driven utilities, and AI-enabled solutions focused on measurable business outcomes.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand current-state processes, identify gaps and risks, and translate business needs into clear technical requirements and solution approaches.
  • Apply object-oriented programming principles and software design practices to create readable, maintainable, and reliable solutions.
  • Own discrete pieces of work from intake through delivery, including scoping, prioritization, testing, rollout, dependency management, and risk identification.
  • Collaborate with internal technology teams and platform partners to align solutions with broader platform standards and capabilities.
  • Support adoption and ongoing resilience by documenting solutions, guiding users through changes, incorporating feedback, and ensuring appropriate operational support.

Your experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with 3–6 years of relevant Developer or Business Analyst experience.
  • Hands-on proficiency in Python, SQL, and databases, including experience writing production-quality scripts, queries, or small applications.
  • Familiarity with version control and development workflows, along with Agile practices such as backlogs, sprints, and iterative delivery.
  • Working knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts and software design principles, with an emphasis on readable, maintainable solutions.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms and AI-enabled tooling, with an understanding of machine learning models, including large language models and neural networks.
  • Interest in the investment management industry and investment products.
