Who we’re looking for

We are looking for a Chief of Staff to work alongside our VP of Finance & Operations. You will run the meetings where leadership makes its decisions, build the material that goes into them, own the projects that do not sit naturally with any one team, and make sure that what gets decided actually happens.

The job is deliberately broad, and that breadth is the point. This is a development role; built to give you a complete picture of how the business runs and to prepare you for other roles across the company over time. You will see how decisions get made at every level, and you will have a hand in most of them.

The test we are hiring against is a simple one. If the VP is away for a week, can you run the key business meetings, keep decisions moving, and leave people confident that they were dealing with someone who speaks for the function?

What you’ll be doing

  • You will work as an extension of the VP of Finance & Operations, and you will own the key cross functional business meetings that set up the company's rhythm. That means the agenda, the material, the deck itself, and the follow up once everyone has left the room.
  • You will also own independent projects end to end, both strategic and ad-hoc, taking them from an open question through to a recommendation the business can act on. On larger cross functional initiatives, you will act as program manager, driving scope, sequencing, and delivery across teams you do not manage.
  • Alongside that, you will stay close to the rest of the function. The core areas of finance and operations each have an owner, and you will work with them as a second owner: contributing where it helps, covering when someone is stretched, and building real depth in how each part works. You will not own those areas, and the routine operational work stays with the teams that run it.
  • This is not a strategy only role. You will build the deck, run the project plan, and do the analysis yourself. The people who do well in this job are the ones who can move between shaping a decision one week and producing the work the next.

The primary responsibilities for our next Chief of Staff will be to:

Executive Operating & Communication

  • Own the key cross functional business meetings, from planning through to follow through
  • Own the company facing business narrative across recurring business updates, companywide meetings, and leadership presentations
  • Drive decisions to closure, tracking owners and deadlines out of leadership meetings and escalating when things slip

Projects & Programs

  • Own independent strategic and ad-hoc projects end to end, from framing the question through to a recommendation the business can act on
  • Act as program manager for major cross functional initiatives, driving scope, sequencing, and delivery across teams you do not manage

Partnership & Breadth

  • Stand in for the VP where their presence is not required, and work across every function in the business
  • Act as a second owner across the core areas of finance and operations: contributing, covering, and building real depth in each

At Fieldwire, we’re looking for our next Chief of Staff to have the following skills and experiences

  • 4 to 7 years in FP&A, strategic finance, business operations, consulting, or a comparable chief of staff role
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience owning recurring leadership meetings, from setting the agenda and preparing the material through to chasing what was decided
  • Strong writing and presenting, including building executive presentations yourself and delivering them to a full room
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills, comfortable taking an open question through to a recommendation
  • Experience running cross functional programs and getting things delivered through teams you do not manage
  • Comfortable with senior leaders, and able to keep a leadership discussion moving toward a decision rather than letting it drift
  • A good working understanding of how a SaaS business operates and what drives its numbers
  • Genuine curiosity about parts of the business outside your own remit, and an interest in growing into a bigger role over time

And if you have any of the following, we REALLY want you to apply today!

  • Experience in B2B SaaS
  • Experience in construction technology
  • Previous experience as a Chief of Staff
  • Experience inside a company owned by a larger parent organization

Compensation:

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows: $145,000 to $175,000.

The salary range represents the low and high end of the salary range for this job in the US. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors such as your skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition to the salary, you may be eligible for a corporate bonus which can range up to 30%.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
