Work directly with the CEO to drive ambiguous, high-priority initiatives to completion across operations, customer relationships, recruiting, finance, legal, strategy, vendors, and special projects. The role will establish lightweight systems, resolve bottlenecks, coordinate stakeholders, support hiring and customer engagement, translate technical context, and ensure critical company priorities do not fall through the cracks.

Chief of Staff

Our mission at Wafer is to maximize intelligence per watt by using AI to optimize AI infrastructure, achieving thousands of times better energy and cost efficiency.

We believe cheap intelligence is the most essential piece of technology for a future of abundance. And we aim to build the future with intelligence too cheap to meter.

Wafer is well funded and serves trillions of tokens a month for mission-critical workloads. We serve high-performance inference to some of the fastest-growing AI companies in the world.

We're looking for a Chief of Staff to work directly with our CEO and make the company move faster. This is an unusually broad role. Your job is to take ownership of whatever important work would otherwise fall through the cracks.

One week that might mean coordinating an important customer visit, building a financial model, and helping negotiate a vendor contract. The next it might mean figuring out a new office, running a recruiting process, preparing for an investor meeting, or turning a messy strategic question into a clear decision.

You should be the kind of person we can hand an incomplete thought to and trust that it will come back finished.

About the role

Wafer is a very small team growing extremely quickly. At our size, there are constantly important things that do not cleanly belong to any one function. Today, many of those things end up with the CEO.

Your job is to change that.

You'll work directly with the CEO across company operations, customers, recruiting, finance, strategy, legal, and special projects. You won't necessarily be the permanent owner of each function. Instead, you'll make sure the highest-priority things happen, build systems when they're needed, and help us figure out what should eventually become its own function.

This is not a coordinator role. We expect you to operate independently, exercise judgment, and drive things to completion.

Some of the work will be highly strategic. Some of it will be deeply operational. We care much more about whether something matters to the company than the type of work.

This role is five days a week in person at our San Francisco office.

What you will do
  • Take ambiguous problems from the CEO and drive them from rough idea to completed outcome.

  • Keep important company priorities from falling through the cracks across teams.

  • Help manage our most important customer relationships. Coordinate dinners, meetings, visits, follow-ups, gifts, events, and anything else that makes customers feel exceptionally taken care of, while keeping founders directly involved in the relationships that matter.

  • Own company operations that don't yet justify a dedicated function, including office operations, vendors, logistics, travel, contracts, and special projects.

  • Support recruiting when needed, particularly on high-priority searches and closing exceptional candidates.

  • Handle legal and administrative workflows alongside outside counsel and make sure important issues actually reach resolution.

  • Take technical context from the engineering team and turn it into clear communication for customers, candidates, investors, and partners.

  • Identify recurring bottlenecks and either fix them yourself, build a lightweight system around them, or help us hire the person who should own them permanently.

  • Do whatever else is most important for Wafer that week.

Who you are
  • You are extremely high agency. When something is unclear, your instinct is to figure it out rather than wait for instructions.

  • You are unusually organized and detail-oriented. Things do not disappear when they are handed to you.

  • You have excellent judgment and know when to make a decision yourself versus pull someone else in.

  • You are comfortable switching between very different kinds of work in the same day.

  • You are scrappy. You solve problems with the minimum amount of process necessary.

  • You communicate extremely clearly and can represent Wafer well with customers, candidates, investors, and partners.

  • You have enough technical curiosity and fluency to understand an AI infrastructure company and learn quickly from engineers.

  • You are discreet and trustworthy with sensitive company information.

  • You have low ego. Booking a restaurant for a customer and helping think through a major financing decision can both be important parts of the job.

  • You have operated in a fast-moving, early-stage, or otherwise extremely demanding environment.

  • Most importantly, you learn very quickly and get an unreasonable amount done.
