Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) performs a range of standard and technically demanding procedures and analysis on patient specimens in one or more clinical laboratory disciplines. This role recognizes critical and significant findings, reports test results, and maintains records of patient tests. Also, recognizes technical, instrumental, or physiological problems that could adversely affect tests or results, resolves, and documents. Performs calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments. Adheres to quality control protocols to ensure accuracy of results. Monitors the accuracy and precision of all laboratory tests personally performed. Actively participates in continuing education programs. Communicates technical and general information to manager and medical staff. 

Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, quality control requirements, and preventative maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for performing complex microbiology testing with minimal supervision during overnight hours.
  • Review, interpret, and report microbiology results in accordance with laboratory principles and regulatory standards.
  • Perform organism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing utilizing laboratory instrumentation and established protocols.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities may be required.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Baccalaureate Degree in medical technology or related science required.
  • 2+ years experience required in Microbiology
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision 

Shift Requirement:

Must be able to work overnight with anticipated schedule of  9/9:30pm - 5:30/6am. Must be able to work 2nd shift at various times and rotating weekends. 


License Required:

Must meet and maintain current State of California licensure requirements for one of the following.

  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist
  • One of the following Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist:
    • CHEMISTRY - Clinical Chemist Scientist
    • HEMATOLOGY/URINALYSIS - Hematologist Scientist
    • TRANSFUSION SERVICE - Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist
    • MICROBIOLOGY - Clinical Microbiologist Scientist / Public Health Microbiologist

License Preferred:

  • N/A


Certifications Required:

  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist License
  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist Limited License in Microbiology
