About Meter

Meter’s mission is to make the internet a utility: a world where any business can turn on reliable, secure, enterprise-grade internet at any physical location as easily as it turns on power or water. Getting there is genuinely hard, because internet and networking have become deeply fragmented and crystallized. So Meter does the whole thing: we design and manufacture our own networking hardware, procure and manage ISPs, design, configure, and physically install networks, operate and monitor them once they’re live, and are working toward running them autonomously.

Put differently, Meter is a hardware company, a software and models company, an internet service provider, an installer, and a real estate business, all at once.

Why this role matters

Each of those businesses has to be sold, structured, and signed. You'll close the material revenue contracts that keep the lights on and fund Meter's most ambitious work, bring creative structure to our most strategic deals, and be who Sales, Finance, and the CEO come to when a deal has to get done. You'll own Meter's entire commercial motion end-to-end: enterprise sales agreements and SLAs, reseller and partner deals, the real estate licenses that let us pre-install Meter hardware in buildings, the supply chain and installer agreements that enable Meter's business, and the vendor and marketing contracts that keep the business moving. And as that motion grows in volume and geography, you won't just close today's deals; you'll stand up the commercial legal function, from templates and playbooks to the CLM, that makes every future deal faster, cleaner, and more repeatable.

This is a founding role, reporting to the General Counsel and based in San Francisco.

What you’ll own
  • Develop a deep understanding of Meter’s products and services, go-to-market and sales strategy, and mission. Know not just what we sell, but how Meter wins.

  • Draft, structure, negotiate, and close Meter’s material customer agreements and SLAs across every Sales Team, grounding each commitment in real engineering and product plans.

  • Paper the rest of the GTM motion: Meter’s channel agreements (MSP, VAR, distributor, and referral), plus the contracts and tooling that let partners sell and deliver Meter.

  • Negotiate and close Meter’s pre-installation agreements: the property licenses and access rights that let us install our hardware in buildings.

  • Build a legal supply chain function, negotiating and closing the supplier, manufacturing, and logistics agreements behind the hardware we design and build.

  • Independently manage the contracting process for your deals, from scoping to execution, partnering with nearly every team at Meter: Sales, Finance, Security, Engineering, Product, and Deployment.

  • Be the fast lane for everything else, from NDAs to recruiting agreements to the one-off transactions of a fast-growing global business, so no one waits on legal.

  • Stand up and run Meter’s CLM, owning the contract lifecycle from intake to signature to renewal.

  • Build the templates, playbooks, and repeatable processes that bring calm and predictability to Sales, let them handle routine contracting without a lawyer in the loop, and make every next deal close faster, even as volume and geography grow.

  • Be a true partner to Sales and Finance leaders and the friendly face of Meter Commercial Legal. They should know, in their bones, that you want the deal done as much as they do.

How you’ll do it
  • You’re a dealmaker at heart. Fast, responsive, client-obsessed, and energized by working shoulder to shoulder with intense sales teams, you thrive under pressure and love closing a critical revenue contract quickly and without drama.

  • You’re a precise, creative drafter who takes pride in the craft, writing clear, pragmatic contracts and finding the path to a solution instead of the easy way out.

  • You’re a tactful, friendly, high-integrity negotiator, in writing and across the table. You know which terms to defend and which to trade, with empathy for both your team and the counterparty, which is what closes deals that hold up.

  • You’re a builder, not just a closer. You don’t just close deals fast; you make them easier to close for everyone, building the templates, playbooks, and tooling that speed up the next one.

  • You’re a relentless project manager and communicator. You chase down inputs from every team a deal touches, set aggressive but realistic deadlines that you meet (and usually beat), and drive deals to signature with a dozen things competing for your attention.

  • You have strong judgment and a bias against over-lawyering. You make independent calls with conviction and size the real risk instead of rabbit-holing on theoretical risk or over-negotiating against yourself.

  • You’re fluent in how the business works. You understand Meter’s products, services, and channel well enough to run complex deals and grasp what we’re pulling off, or, if you don’t yet, you’ll nerd out and learn it fast.

  • You’re low-ego, kind, assume best intentions, and in it for the long haul.

Where this can go

This is one of two cornerstone legal hires; you'd be lawyer #2 or #3. If you love deftly closing deals that are good for Meter, and building the systems that make the next deal faster, you'll earn the trust of our Sales, Finance, and Product teams and become a lawyer the business can't imagine operating without. As Meter's business grows, so will the seat: bigger, more strategic deals to close, and a team to build and lead. And you'll do it on a small, rigorous legal team that takes its work (but not itself) seriously.

What we’re looking for
  • A J.D. from a top law school and experience at a top law firm.

  • In-house regulatory experience.

  • Member in good standing of at least one state bar.

Compensation

We think about Meter’s compensation as a combination of salary, equity, benefits, and the experience of doing the best work of your career alongside a talented team.

  • The estimated salary range for this role is $172,000 - $275,000.

  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Meter’s equity plan.

The salary range represents the low and high end of the range for this role in the Bay Area. The actual offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.
