OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world.
This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told, in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning.
About the RoleWe’re looking for a Creative Director with deep expertise in 3D, motion, and visual storytelling to join our growing in-house creative team. This role will help define and lead motion-driven creative work across OpenAI’s marketing and communications efforts, bringing clarity, craft, and emotional resonance to complex ideas.
In this role, you’ll help shape how OpenAI shows up in the world at a moment when the story is still being written. You’ll lead concept development and execution across campaigns, launches, films, digital experiences, social content, web, presentations, and other emerging formats. You’ll partner closely with brand, marketing, communications, design, and production teams to create work that is both highly crafted and strategically clear.
To us, creativity is a team sport. Ideas get better when you talk them through and build on each other’s thinking. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance craft with decisiveness.
In This Role, You WillLead creative direction for 3D and motion work across marketing and communications initiatives.
Develop visual concepts, motion systems, storyboards, style frames, animatics, and prototypes that bring complex ideas to life.
Translate abstract, technical, or emerging concepts into clear, engaging visual narratives.
Guide the creation of high-quality motion and 3D assets across campaigns, launches, films, social, web, presentations, and digital experiences.
Collaborate with brand, marketing, communications, design, and production partners from concept through final delivery.
Help define and evolve OpenAI’s motion design principles, systems, and standards across channels.
Provide clear creative direction to designers, motion artists, animators, editors, and external partners.
Balance hands-on craft with creative leadership, moving fluidly between big-picture direction and detailed execution.
Ensure work maintains a high bar for storytelling, pacing, composition, typography, visual consistency, and brand expression.
Partner with producers and project managers to scope work, manage timelines, and deliver high-quality creative on deadline.
Participate in reviews and critiques, offering and incorporating thoughtful, constructive feedback.
Help build a creative culture rooted in collaboration, experimentation, rigor, and care.
10+ years of experience in creative direction, motion design, animation, 3D design, or related creative fields.
A portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion, 3D, brand, campaign, and visual storytelling work.
Strong fundamentals in storytelling, timing, composition, typography, art direction, and visual systems.
Experience leading motion-driven creative across marketing and communications touch points.
Fluency in 3D and motion workflows, including concept development, animation, rendering, compositing, and post-production.
Comfort integrating rendered 3D visuals with 2D design systems, typography, graphic layouts, and compositing.
Experience directing teams and external partners through ambiguous, fast-moving creative challenges.
Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate creative decisions clearly to cross-functional partners.
A high craft bar and strong attention to detail across both strategy and execution.
Comfort working in a fast-paced, evolving environment where the work may not have a familiar precedent.
Experience with tools such as Maya, Nuke, After Effects, Cinema 4D, Blender, or other industry-standard 3D, motion, and compositing tools.
Curiosity about new creative tools and workflows, including emerging AI-enabled creative processes.
