About the Team

API Multicloud partners with cloud service providers (CSPs) to bring OpenAI’s frontier models and APIs into the cloud environments where developers and enterprises already build. We own the API end to end across CSP platforms, from API integration and request routing through inference execution, capacity management, and day-to-day operations. Our mission is to make these capabilities available broadly and safely while preserving the reliability and developer experience customers expect from OpenAI.

Delivering that experience requires work across the stack: adapting API services and cloud-native integrations, bringing up model-serving environments, validating new releases, and operating the systems that connect customer requests to available capacity. We work directly with CSP engineering teams and partner closely with OpenAI’s inference, API, infrastructure, security, and Safety Systems teams. Together, we turn new model capabilities and partner requirements into dependable production services, with attention to performance, operational readiness, and efficient use of compute.

Our work contributes to OpenAI’s AWS partnership, including the launch of Daybreak Red and Daybreak Blue on Amazon Bedrock — and OpenAI’s newly announced Google Cloud partnership will bring our frontier models and Codex agentic workflows to Google Cloud’s Model Garden. These efforts let customers use OpenAI capabilities within the cloud infrastructure, security controls, and workflows they already rely on.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for building and operating OpenAI’s API across major cloud service providers. You’ll lead a team of engineers focused on establishing scalable, reliable, and efficient cloud deployment platforms that bring OpenAI’s frontier models to customers across multiple cloud environments.

In this role, you'll own the technical direction, execution, and operational excellence of the API Multicloud platform. You'll guide your team through complex infrastructure challenges, including deploying model-serving environments, scaling capacity, optimizing performance and utilization, and building reusable systems that enable OpenAI to expand across CSP platforms. You'll balance long-term architectural investments with the urgency of delivering new model capabilities and partner integrations.

You'll work closely with engineering leaders across inference, API, infrastructure, security, and Safety Systems, while building strong technical partnerships with CSP engineering teams. Your team will play a critical role in determining how quickly OpenAI can bring new models to market, how reliably those models operate, and how efficiently we scale our infrastructure across cloud providers.

You'll also be responsible for building and developing a high-performing engineering team, setting clear technical priorities, and fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and operational excellence.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team responsible for building and operating OpenAI's API infrastructure across multiple cloud providers.

  • Define the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for API Multicloud, ensuring the platform is scalable, reliable, and efficient.

  • Drive the architecture and execution of complex distributed systems that support API routing, model serving, and cloud infrastructure across CSP environments.

  • Partner closely with inference, API, infrastructure, security, and CSP engineering teams to launch new models, expand platform capabilities, and deliver reliable production services.

  • Own the reliability, performance, and operational excellence of the platform, driving improvements in capacity planning, infrastructure efficiency, and deployment processes.

  • Recruit and develop exceptional engineering talent, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement.

  • Set clear priorities, navigate ambiguity, and drive cross-functional execution while balancing near-term business needs with long-term technical investments.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • Experience leading, building, and developing high-performing engineering teams responsible for large-scale cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or platform engineering.

  • Strong technical background in distributed systems and cloud infrastructure, with the ability to drive architectural decisions and provide technical guidance to senior engineers.

  • Experience building and operating production infrastructure on major cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.

  • Proven track record of leading complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives from architecture through production launch and ongoing operations.

  • Strong understanding of scalability, reliability, performance optimization, and infrastructure efficiency in large-scale production environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent while fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and execution.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience influencing technical direction across engineering teams and external partners.

  • Experience with AI infrastructure, inference systems, or model serving is a plus.
