TITLE: Finance Generalist

DEPARTMENT: Administration 

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Finance and Administration

SALARY: $30-34 Hourly

FLSA: Non-Exempt

HOURS: Full-time, 40 hours per week; some evening or weekend work may be required

POSITION SUMMARY

The Finance Generalist is a cross-functional role that supports both the Finance department and acts as a bridge to the Development team. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Finance and Administration, this position plays a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the budgeting and reporting cycle, tracking accounts and grants, invoicing, and serving as the primary liaison between Finance and Development to ensure timely, accurate grant financial reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented finance generalist passionate about the nonprofit sector, eager to contribute meaningfully to an organization serving Los Angeles youth.

Flexible weekday schedule to be determined with supervisor; limited evening or weekend availability as needed for major reporting deadlines; hybrid schedule (must be approved by supervisor). *Please note that Heart of LA reserves the right to adjust schedules as needed. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Assist the Sr. Director of Finance and Administration in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Compile and maintain accurate financial data to support management decision-making and board reporting.
  • Track departmental spending against the budget and grant tracking sheets.
  • Support the preparation of financial statements and assist with the annual audit process.

Accounts Tracking & Reconciliation

  • Maintain organized financial records and documentation in accordance with organizational policies and funder requirements.
  • Track restricted and unrestricted fund balances across multiple funding sources.

Budgeting Support

  • Assist the Sr. Director of Finance and Administration in the annual budgeting process, including data gathering, entry, and analysis.
  • Support the preparation of program-level and departmental budget reports.
  • Monitor grant budgets throughout the fiscal year and assist with budget modifications as needed.
  • Provide budget-to-actual analyses to support programmatic and operational planning.

Finance–Development Liaison

  • Serve as the primary point of coordination between the Finance and Development departments for all grant-related financial matters.
  • Prepare grant financial reports — including budgets, expenditure reports, and supporting documentation — in collaboration with Development staff and in alignment with funder guidelines.
  • Track grant award periods, reporting deadlines, and financial compliance requirements across all active grants.
  • Review grant budgets for new and renewed awards and ensure accurate coding and tracking in the financial system.
  • Support the Development team in preparing financial components of grant proposals and letters of inquiry.

Other Duties

  • May perform other finance related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS | TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in finance or a related role. Nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Martus or similar).
  • Understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities effectively within a 40-hour work week.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
  • Commitment to the organizational mission and sensitivity to underserved youth.
  • Must pass CA DOJ background check.
