Open-ended builder role at an HR technology startup developing auditable infrastructure for AI-driven hiring workflows. Responsibilities may include extending APIs, ontology, policy engines, and automations; creating agent configuration tools; deploying compliance workflows with customers; developing partnerships; producing educational content; and building developer sandboxes, documentation, and open-source packages. The company seeks highly autonomous builders who use AI tools daily, own outcomes, work closely with customers, and prioritize shipping accurate, impactful solutions.

About the Role

This is not a posting for one job. It's an open door for builders who want in on what we're doing.

Every hire crosses a line. Before the offer, the work is finding the right person. After the offer, the work has to be right: identity, work authorization, background checks, tax forms, union agreements, credentials. Someone's name is on every one of them. AI agents are taking over the first half. Nobody is taking the accountability for the second. That's us.

Onboarded is the API for the workflows that have to be right. We never built I-9 as a feature. We built primitives: an ontology of the worker, the job, the client and the employer, forms written as code, policies kept current, automations that react when a fact changes. More than six million workers have become eligible for work on that engine. Some of the largest HR tech platforms in the world run on it under their own brand. And it's starting to run work that has nothing to do with onboarding at all.

An agent can decide. An agent cannot be liable. Every hiring agent being built right now needs a deterministic, auditable layer underneath it. We're building that layer, and we're a small team doing it. If you've read this far and thought "I want to build that," we want to hear from you, even if no role on our careers page fits.

What You'll Do

We hire for the person first and shape the seat around what you're great at. Here's the work that needs doing:

  • Build the engine. Extend the ontology, the policy engine and the automations framework. Make agents first-class callers through our APIs and MCP server.
  • Build the agent that writes configuration. Turn a policy, a union contract or a customer request into config a human reviews and ships. This is how a small team serves a big market.
  • Deploy into the field. Embed with customers and partners and build their compliance workflows as code. Everyone here gets close to the people who use what we build.
  • Grow the ecosystem. Open doors with the hiring platforms, staffing systems and HR software companies that distribute Onboarded, and turn signed partnerships into live customers.
  • Tell the story. Define a category in public. Write, ship, film and teach how the work that has to be right gets done in the agent era.
  • Make developers love it. Build the sandbox, the quickstart, the docs and the open-source packages that let a developer ship compliant onboarding in ten minutes.
What We're Looking For

Titles and pedigree matter less here than how you work. Every person at Onboarded shares a few things:

  • You build. Code, systems, partnerships, stories, whatever your craft is. You'd rather ship something real this week than plan something perfect next quarter.
  • AI is how you work. You use AI tools as a force multiplier every day, whatever your role. This is non-negotiable.
  • You care about getting it right. Our work decides whether a real person starts their job on time and compliantly. You know the difference between fast and right, and you deliver both.
  • You own outcomes, not tasks. If you see it, you own it. Nobody routes it to you.
  • You get close to the customer. You'd rather sit with the people using the product than guess what they need.
  • You say it plainly. Short sentences. Conviction first. Clearly wrong and corrected beats vaguely right.

Experience in HR tech, staffing, payroll, developer platforms or employment compliance is a strong signal but not required. Learning velocity counts just as much.

This is not a fit for someone who wants a defined lane, a long ramp, or a big company's structure. It is for builders who want to own something that matters, early.

Why Onboarded
  • The timing is now. Agents are rewriting how hiring works, and every one of them needs a layer it can trust underneath. We're already that layer for millions of workers. The next few years decide who owns it.
  • Your work ships and it matters. A small team means everything you build reaches production and real people. No layers between you and the outcome.
  • You'll build next to the founders. A direct line to our CEO, co-founder and CTO, who are in customer accounts and code every week. You'll shape the company, not just a feature.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing startup
  • Health, dental, vision, and retirement benefits
  • Remote-first culture with optional in-person collaboration
  • A chance to build the layer every hiring agent depends on
How to Apply

Send a short introduction + your resume, LinkedIn or GitHub to [email protected] with "Open Role" in the subject. Tell us three things: what you'd want to build here, one thing you've built that you're proud of, and how AI tools fit into your work. Skip the cover letter. Show us.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
