Senior Hardware Reliability Engineer - Power Electronics

We are looking for a hands-on, execution-focused Staff Reliability Engineer to lead product reliability for Lunar Energy’s home energy systems, spanning our power electronics, battery, and solar products.

This role owns system-level reliability from early architecture through fleet deployment. You will set the reliability strategy, define qualification and accelerated life testing approaches, and shape our failure analysis practices so that every product we ship performs for its full design life in customers’ homes. You will work across Test, Mechanical, Electrical, Firmware, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Field Service teams, and you will help turn our mission of a cleaner, more resilient energy future into products people can count on for years.

Lunar Energy was founded to transition homes to 100% clean energy—making our electricity greener, our air cleaner and our energy more safe, secure and reliable for all. We’re a fast-growing, global company building the world’s best clean energy products to electrify all homes and connect communities to form clean, resilient virtual power plants.

On a given day at Lunar, you’ll likely…

  • Own the reliability strategy for our power electronics and battery systems, including the component and system level reliability requirements that guide it.
  • Establish targeted and prioritized test plans based on an in-depth understanding of the design, identified design risks, reliability goals, and physics-of-failure methodology to efficiently de-risk new products and various changes/iterations throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers during hardware design to provide Design for Reliability (DfR) inputs during new product development.
  • Drive Design Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEA) for various systems to capture design risks and the impact of different failure modes, and implement appropriate mitigation activities.
  • Track field reliability performance and identify opportunities for continuous product improvement and reliability growth. Collaborate with the finance team to provide insights into our warranty program.
  • Lead root-cause investigations of complex power electronics and PCBA failures.
    • Guide team to efficiently get critical pieces of evidence either through FA techniques or hypothesis testing to prove/disprove failure hypotheses.
    • Provide expertise on failure physics for in depth understanding of failure mechanism
    • Drive containment and countermeasure validation
  • Use Weibull and lifetime modeling to project field reliability. Surface and communicate critical reliability risks to serve as a decisive voice for validation in product release readiness reviews.

Desired Skills:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Ability to manage complex reliability decisions in fast paced environments e.g. Balancing reliability risk against cost, schedule, and performance
  • Experience with accelerated life testing models and the governing equations, as well as applied reliability statistics (e.g., Weibull analysis) and risk analysis
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional root-cause investigations in a fast-moving hardware company
  • Working knowledge of failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM, CSAM, X-ray, cross-sectioning, and EDX, including knowing which technique to recommend for a given failure
  • Familiarity with PCBA reliability best design practices in conjunction with a strong grasp of failure physics in PCBAs/common power electronics components is a strong plus
  • Working knowledge of the theory of operation of common power converter topologies is a plus

Benefits:
