Senior Software Engineer I, Financial Systems

The Senior Software Engineer, Financial Systems role sits at the intersection of software engineering and financial systems. This is a full-time software engineering role with a financial systems specialization -- a technologist who builds and owns the integration layer that keeps HubSpot financially accurate, compliant, and fast.

This role exists to partner with HubSpot's Finance organization to make sure HubSpot can quickly and accurately understand its financial position, report revenue correctly, serve customers efficiently, and inform business decisions with reliable financial data. It is a cross-functional role by design, built to work across Finance, Compliance, Security, Internal Audit, and external auditors alongside engineering and product teams.

Engineers in this role own the integration layer across HubSpot's financial systems: Aptitude, NetSuite, SOVOS, Avalara, and similar platforms. The ongoing work is integration ownership, compliance, and incremental improvements to our reporting pipelines, revenue recognition systems, and general ledgers. The right candidate is a strong software engineer who finds financial systems compelling -- someone drawn to building at the intersection of technical rigor and financial correctness.

KEY EXPECTATIONS

A Senior Software Engineer, Financial Systems is a technologist. They can run with complex financial systems projects autonomously, design sound integrations, and deliver solutions that are both technically correct and financially rigorous.

  • Can iron out the vagaries of requirements, break problems down into tractable pieces, and implement each piece with minimal hand-holding.
  • Takes initiative and demonstrates ownership by driving quality improvements, resolving incidents, and following through on commitments to deliver reliable results.
  • Builds with financial rigor. Understands that a bug in a billing feature is a bad customer experience, but a bug in revenue recognition is a restatement. Financial correctness is a quality bar, not an afterthought.
  • Understands complex financial domains at a working level: revenue recognition principles (ASC 606 / IFRS 15), SOX compliance requirements (change management, segregation of duties, audit evidence, second reviewer), and how data moves across ERP, billing, and GTM systems.
  • Has hands-on experience with financial systems -- ERPs, financial software vendors, or billing and GTM integrations. Familiarity with systems like NetSuite, Aptitude, SOVOS, and Avalara is a strong signal.
  • Partners across engineering, product, compliance, finance, internal audit, external auditors, and security to build clear, reliable integrations with HubSpot's financial systems. Can explain a system design to an auditor and a data flow to a controller.
  • Provides regular and proactive updates so all stakeholders -- engineering and non-engineering -- know where work stands.
  • Mentors or teaches other engineers on the team or in related areas.
  • Embraces and effectively leverages AI development tools (such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) to enhance productivity and code quality.
  • When needed, actively participate in the interview process to hire the best people. Embodies HubSpot's HEART and DI&B values throughout.

RELIABILITY EXPECTATIONS

Senior Software Engineer, Financial Systems build and maintain systems where an outage or data error has direct financial and legal consequences. Reliability means more than uptime -- it means financial reports are accurate, integrations run correctly, and any failure is documented and corrected completely.

  • They are a member of the team's PagerDuty rotation. Proficient in operations and incident response, and responsible and responsive to alerts. Can handle minor incidents autonomously but knows when to involve others.
  • Consistently produces well-tested software that handles failures gracefully and meets code quality guidelines.
  • Knows all rollout methods (gates, config, canary deploys, library canaries, pre-release tags) and when to use them.
  • Knows how to debug systems and applications effectively using tools like Metrics, Logfetch, Error Reporting, and Tracing.
  • Code reviews go deeper than surface-level. Gravitates toward discussions about unhandled edge cases, failure scenarios, performance issues, or regressions -- with particular attention to financial data correctness and edge cases in integration logic.
  • Raises issues if the team tries to move too fast, cut corners, or reliability starts to drop.
  • Takes ownership of reliability and security work. Completes work items independently and proactively. Triages work so there is enough time to complete it in SLA.
  • Owns the reliability of financial reporting and integrations. During month-end and quarter-end close, they are available and responsive. Integration failures that affect financial data are treated as high severity and resolved with urgency.
  • Incidents in financial systems are documented completely: root cause, impact on financial data, and remediation steps. Finance and Internal Audit are looped in appropriately.
  • Changes to SOX-controlled systems go through proper change management. Can serve as a qualified second reviewer on any controlled integration check they own.

GROWING IN THIS ROLE

There is significant room for growth within the Senior Software Engineer, Financial Systems role. Engineers can grow in multiple directions:

  • Master existing technical skills and expand ownership across more of HubSpot's financial systems stack.
  • Go deeper on compliance engineering: SOX controls, audit trail design, change management.
  • Take on broader system design work and own larger pieces of HubSpot's financial data layer.
  • Develop a reputation as a trusted technical resource for Finance leadership and Internal Audit.
  • Mentor newer members of the Financial Systems team.
  • Serve as the technical leader for larger financial systems projects, working alongside Finance and engineering leadership to shape multi-year systems strategy.
