Design and build distributed manufacturing software coordinating state, timing, and behavior across hardware. Implement APIs, real-time controllers, instrumentation for ML/AI, and reliability/observability. Drive architecture decisions, improve CI/CD and testing practices, debug across software/firmware/hardware, and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to converge on a production-ready platform.

Atomic Machines is building the Matter Compiler™: a general-purpose, AI-native manufacturing system designed to turn digital designs into functional devices through arbitrary combinations of materials and processes. Starting at the microscale, it brings together precision robotics, physical AI, and optimization to make manufacturing programmable. New devices come from composing reusable manufacturing capabilities, with physical results feeding back into design and production. Our ambition is lights-out manufacturing that learns from every build.

We recently emerged from stealth and introduced PrimeSwitch, the first device realized through the Matter Compiler. This electromechanical power relay provides concrete evidence of what the platform makes possible and marks an early milestone toward a much broader manufacturing vision.

Why This Role Matters

FABOS is the Matter Compiler’s control plane. It maintains a trustworthy view of materials and equipment, plans production, and coordinates execution across the fab. It connects planned work to physical results so people and autonomous systems can understand what happened, what remains uncertain, and what can happen next.

You’ll build the dependable execution software that makes this general-purpose platform work as its capabilities and combinations grow. Our team already has deep expertise in data engineering and algorithms. We need a hands-on software engineer with deep architectural experience and systems thinking to turn that expertise into simple, dependable software.

Your primary responsibility is managing complexity: defining clear responsibilities and interfaces, limiting coupling, and making the system easier to understand, test, operate, and change. Fluency in data and optimization, paired with a willingness to work with hardware, supports that responsibility. The architecture is still taking shape, and you’ll help establish the foundations for scaling to more machines, processes, and devices.

What You’ll Do
  • Collaboratively define component responsibilities, state ownership, and interfaces; remove or simplify unnecessary complexity.
  • Build and test production software in Go and Python
  • Establish and maintain core software interfaces with data engineering and AI systems
  • Evolve existing systems through safe, incremental migrations.
  • Resolve integration issues with operators and engineers, including hands-on work with fab equipment.
  • Work with cross functional teams to develop requirements and acceptance criteria
What You’ll Need
  • 8+ years building production software; productive in Go and Python.
  • Demonstrated meaningful ownership of architectural decisions in a complex production system.
  • Demonstrate first-principles thinking with sound instincts for strategic tradeoffs.
  • Closed-loop experience: Operated or evolved the system long enough to observe the consequences of those decisions, explain what worked and failed, and improve the architecture.
  • Experience testing, operating, and safely migrating systems where correctness matters.
  • Translate expert knowledge and user needs into software requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Discuss data models, transactions, and durable history with data engineers; objectives, constraints, inputs, and outputs with optimization experts.
  • Demonstrated interaction with equipment. Have had to understand and troubleshoot physical workflows.
  • Has willingness to work directly with fab equipment
  • BS in CS or related field

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.

Salary Range
$180,000—$230,000 USD

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
