540 is seeking a Senior UI/UX Designer to support the DoW in building a next-generation Air Force aircraft maintenance application powered by Angular, Apigee, Kubernetes, and Google Cloud. Designers on this team play a critical role in shaping how Air Force maintainers interact with the platform by translating complex maintenance workflows into intuitive and effective user experiences.

You’ll work closely with engineers, architects, product stakeholders, and end users to design interfaces that improve usability, efficiency, and operational effectiveness across the aircraft maintenance platform.

Location: Remote within the continental United States
Citizenship & Clearance Requirement: per client requirements, candidates must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a DoW Secret clearance
Education Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, or related field (preferred)

HOW YOU’LL DRIVE IMPACT

  • Lead the design of intuitive, user-centered interfaces for a complex aircraft maintenance platform
  • Translate operational workflows and technical requirements into clear, usable interface designs
  • Create and iterate on user flows, journey maps, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups
  • Collaborate with engineers and product stakeholders to ensure designs are technically feasible and implemented accurately
  • Conduct stakeholder and user interviews to understand workflows, pain points, and mission requirements
  • Work directly with end users to validate designs and ensure solutions support real-world operational needs
  • Develop and maintain design standards and UI patterns to support consistency across the platform
  • Present design concepts and rationale to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborate closely with front-end engineers to ensure designs are implemented correctly in Angular-based applications
  • Continuously improve the user experience by incorporating user feedback, usability testing, and iterative design

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • 7+ years of UI/UX design experience for digital applications
  • Deep understanding of User-Centered Design principles and methodologies
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating design process and deliverables across a variety of digital products or platforms
  • Experience producing user flows, journey maps, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups
  • Experience conducting stakeholder interviews and user research
  • Ability to translate complex workflows and functional requirements into intuitive visual experiences
  • Experience designing for component-based design systems or modern front-end frameworks (Angular, React, etc.)
  • Working understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including engineers, architects, and product stakeholders
  • Strong sense of ownership and ability to drive design work from concept through delivery

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience working with Angular Material design systems
  • Experience collaborating closely with developers to validate UI implementations
  • Familiarity with modern Agile software development practices
  • Understanding of content strategy principles and best practices
  • Experience supporting U.S. Federal Government programs, particularly with the Department of War
