Job Description:

Altera is seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior AWS Cloud Engineer / Architect to lead the design, implementation, optimization, and operation of AWS cloud infrastructure supporting enterprise applications, business operations, and semiconductor engineering workloads. The ideal candidate combines AWS architecture expertise with practical engineering, infrastructure automation, production troubleshooting, security, and operational excellence. This role translates architecture into working solutions and partners with infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, and engineering teams. Proven experience supporting high-performance computing (HPC) workloads and high-throughput, scalable storage is a core requirement for this role.

Key Responsibilities

AWS Cloud Architecture & Engineering

  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain AWS infrastructure across accounts and environments.
  • Architect highly available, resilient, and scalable solutions using AWS best practices.
  • Manage EC2, VPC, S3, EBS, EFS, RDS, ELB, Auto Scaling, Route 53, and related services.
  • Design connectivity between AWS, corporate locations, and engineering environments.
  • Establish architecture standards and reusable patterns; support migrations and modernization.

Infrastructure as Code & Automation

  • Develop and maintain Terraform provisioning, reusable modules, and automated environment deployments.
  • Implement infrastructure CI/CD using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline, or equivalent.
  • Automate operational tasks with Python, Bash, AWS CLI, and APIs.
  • Maintain version-controlled infrastructure configuration and documentation.

Cloud Operations, Reliability & Performance

  • Own AWS operations, monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident resolution.
  • Implement proactive observability using CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and related tools.
  • Investigate performance, capacity, availability, and service disruptions.
  • Implement backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, and resilience.
  • Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions; improve SLOs.

Cloud Security & Governance

  • Implement Zero Trust-aligned and least-privilege AWS architectures.
  • Manage IAM, federation, encryption, and secure access controls.
  • Use AWS KMS, Security Hub, GuardDuty, AWS Config, and related services.
  • Partner with Cybersecurity on vulnerabilities, posture management, remediation, and compliance.
  • Support secure configuration standards, audits, and access reviews.

Engineering Infrastructure Enablement

  • Partner with semiconductor engineering teams on compute, storage, and performance needs.
  • Support AWS for engineering applications, automation, development, testing, and data-intensive workloads.
  • Evaluate HPC, batch processing, and scalable compute where appropriate.
  • Optimize storage throughput, network performance, and compute utilization.
  • Support secure hybrid integration while balancing performance, availability, security, and cost.

Cloud Cost Optimization & FinOps

  • Monitor and optimize AWS consumption and costs.
  • Implement tagging, cost allocation, budgets, and usage reporting.
  • Identify right-sizing, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and storage lifecycle opportunities.
  • Build cost dashboards and partner with teams on utilization improvements.

HPC & High-Performance Storage Engineering

  • Architect and operate HPC compute environments, including workload schedulers, batch processing, cluster capacity, and performance troubleshooting.
  • Design high-throughput shared storage for engineering workloads, including Amazon FSx for Lustre, EFS, S3, and appropriate on-premises NFS or parallel file systems.
  • Optimize storage IOPS, throughput, latency, data movement, and network performance for compute-intensive workloads.
  • Plan HPC/storage resilience, monitoring, capacity, and cost; partner with engineering teams on workload benchmarks and performance requirements.

The pay range below is for Bay Area California only. Actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including job location, job-related knowledge, skills, experiences, trainings, etc. We also offer incentive opportunities that reward employees based on individual and company performance.
