Backed by leading Silicon Valley investors, Peregrine helps public safety organizations, state and local and governments, federal agencies, and private-sector institutions address society’s challenges with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Our AI-enabled platform turns siloed and disconnected data into operational intelligence — instantly surfacing mission-critical information to empower better, faster decisions that improve outcomes at every touchpoint. Today Peregrine supports hundreds of customers across 30+ states and two countries, serving more than 125 million people — and we’re amplifying our impact as we expand into the enterprise and internationally.

Our Team

The Platform team owns the foundation that every product team at Peregrine builds on. Our job is to make Peregrine's infrastructure fast, resilient, secure, and cost-efficient, while making it easy for other engineers to ship safely and quickly on top of it. We work closely with our traffic engineering team to keep routing, load balancing, and capacity running smoothly as we scale.

We believe great infrastructure is invisible when it's working and clearly communicated when it isn't. We hold ourselves to a high bar on reliability and security, and we treat other engineering teams as our customers, investing in tooling, documentation, and self-service paths that reduce their toil.

Role

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our growing Platform team and lead the technical strategy for scaling Peregrine's cloud footprint. You'll drive initiatives that improve performance and reliability, reduce infrastructure cost, strengthen our security posture, and make the platform more developer-friendly, often all at once. We're open to leveling this role up to Principal based on your experience and scope of impact.

This role blends hands-on technical leadership with cross-functional influence. You'll partner with product engineering teams to understand where infrastructure is a bottleneck, and set technical direction that the rest of the team executes against. As the platform scales, you'll also provide technical guidance to our traffic engineering team. You'll also mentor engineers, review designs, and help build a culture of ownership and operational excellence.

Representative problems you'll work on include: making it possible to stand up new regions and customer environments with minimal manual work as Peregrine's footprint grows; building autoscaling and right-sizing systems that cut cloud spend without sacrificing headroom; strengthening reliability and incident response for mission-critical services so outages are rare and fast to resolve; hardening network and platform security controls to meet the compliance bar our public-sector customers require; building paved-road tooling that lets product teams deploy, observe, and debug their services without needing deep infra expertise; and, as our traffic and capacity needs grow, partnering with our traffic engineering team to help shape technical direction for routing and load balancing at scale.

About You
  • Desire and drive to own large, ambiguous infrastructure problems from design through operation
  • Passion for building platforms that make other engineers faster and more confident
  • Deep interest in the tradeoffs between performance, reliability, cost, and security, and comfort making explicit decisions among them
  • Thrive on ambiguity and enjoy diagnosing hard, high-stakes production problems
  • Excellent technical vision, with the ability to turn broad infrastructure goals into a concrete, sequenced roadmap
What We Look For
  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of experience building and operating cloud infrastructure at scale, with direct ownership of platform, networking, or traffic systems
  • Hands-on experience with major public cloud platforms, container orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code tooling
  • Working knowledge of traffic engineering concepts (load balancing, service mesh, autoscaling, CDN/edge routing, capacity planning) to collaborate effectively with our traffic engineering team
  • Track record of driving down cloud costs through architecture and tooling, without compromising reliability
  • Solid grounding in cloud and network security best practices, and experience working within compliance-driven environments
  • Strong instincts for developer experience: building tools, guardrails, and documentation that make the platform easy and safe to use
  • Comfort operating and improving systems under real production load, including on-call ownership and incident response
  • Located in San Francisco and open to working in the office
