Job Description:

The Temporary Tax Accountant is responsible for the preparation of corporate income, property, excise, and franchise tax returns; assists with the preparation of the monthly income tax provision for financial reporting; maintains tax depreciation, gain/loss, and discontinued operations schedules; assists with various tax audits and government information requests. This position is located at Customer Support Services in San Jose, CA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinates corporate tax and other accounting transactions between the districts and General Office departments

  • Responsible for preparation of corporate income, property, excise, and franchise tax returns. 

  • Prepares the monthly income tax provisions for financial reporting

  • Maintains tax repairs deductions in TFA (fka Powertax).

  • Tracks deferred tax assets; maintains tax depreciation; gain/loss on discontinued operations schedules using TFA (fks Powertax)

  • Maintains and updates the Company’s tax calendar; organizes and maintains tax workpapers

  • Assists with various tax audits and government informational requests or inquiries

  • Prepares reports and schedules for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), federal, state, or local tax authorities

  • Records and reconciles regulatory accounts for state of California Safe Drinking Water contracts

  • Prepares Unclaimed Property filings; sends out email reminder, and reviews and reconciles Company’s unclaimed property

  • Performs other duties as assigned to fulfill business operational needs and objectives

  • Attends meetings and trainings as directed by California Water Service Group

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and/or equivalent relevant experience

  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience working as a tax accountant in a regulatory environment

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal tax regulations

  • Knowledge of the principles of taxable, accounting and finance

  • Prepare multi-state local, state, and federal tax returns using tax return software

  • Knowledge of using PowerPlan and TFA (fka Powertax)

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications

  • Valid California Driver License

  • Knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and Accounting business practices

  • Knowledge of SEC and CPUC rules and regulations

  • Ability to communicate effectively; both verbally and in writing, with agencies, contractors, consultants, customers, employees, and vendors

  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees and management

  • Ability to comply with SOX regulations

  • Ability to prepare complex financial and regulatory reports

  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills

  • Demonstrated decision-making skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service

  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Flexible and able to prioritize work
