Develop and improve MAC-layer scheduling algorithms for fixed wireless broadband systems. Responsibilities include debugging production code and real hardware, analyzing live-network telemetry, building simulations, owning software components, and proposing algorithmic changes that improve deployed network performance. The role emphasizes strong algorithms, mathematics, performance-sensitive programming, and clear technical reasoning, with opportunities to learn wireless communications and systems engineering.

Join the Team That's Redefining Wireless Technology
At Tarana, we're more than just a fast-growing tech company—we’re a team of bold innovators on a mission to revolutionize broadband. Our groundbreaking Fixed Wireless Access technology is delivering fiber-class internet speeds worldwide, bridging the digital divide in ways previously thought impossible.
We are looking for engineers we can grow into this role. You do not need wireless experience. What matters is that you learn quickly, think deeply, and are excited by problems where the answer is not already known. You will be working on the MAC scheduler, the software that decides, thousands of times per second, how spectrum and antenna resources are allocated among users on a sector. It is a hard problem, and it's still evolving. You will work with engineers designing the algorithms running in our product today.

You will start by fixing real bugs in production code, which is the fastest way to learn a system of this scale, and you will own a sub-component. Later, we expect you to propose algorithmic changes that directly affect the performance of our deployed network.

This is an opportunity to go from learning an unfamiliar system to shaping the algorithms at its core.

What You’ll Do:

  • Learn wireless from the ground up: how signals propagate, why interference happens, what a scheduler is actually optimizing
  • Read a lot of code written by people who thought hard about it, and get your own code reviewed by them
  • Debug problems on real hardware, where the answer is often not in the software
  • Work with field telemetry from a live network and learn to find signal in it
  • Build simulations to test whether an idea works before anyone commits to building it

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and the mathematics underneath them: probability, linear algebra, and enough comfort with proofs to reason about why something works
  • You can already program well. C++ or C preferred, but if you are strong in another language and have written performance-sensitive code, we will take that seriously
  • Evidence that you build things because you want to, not because they were assigned. A project you took further than the class required, something you wrote to solve your own problem, a system you built and kept improving
  • The ability to explain your reasoning clearly, including the parts you are unsure about

What Would Make You Stand Out

  • Wireless or communications coursework, including signal processing or information theory.
  • Optimization, control theory, or applied machine learning.
  • Embedded or systems programming, or experience where performance and memory constraints mattered.
What we offer:
We don’t just build next-gen wireless technology — we build people.

The salary range for this position is: $90,000 to $120,000
Compensation will be determined based on several factors, including, but not limited to, skill set, years of experience, and the employee’s geographic location.
Tarana provides competitive benefits to employees in this role, including medical, dental, and vision benefits, 401K match, flexible time off, and stock options.
Join Tarana and help shape the future of wireless connectivity.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
