About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on Uber's AI Foundations & Developer Experience (AIFX) team, you will set technical direction across multiple AIFX projects and lead efforts that reach engineering teams across Uber. You'll help define how AI agents plan, build, review, verify, and ship software at Uber, and turn that vision into platforms thousands of engineers depend on. You'll make long-term architectural bets in a space where models and agent harnesses change month to month, while keeping today's systems reliable.

About the Team

Uber's AI Foundations & Developer Experience (AIFX) team, part of Developer Platform, is a centralized, cross-monorepo team building the next generation of agentic AI systems for Uber's engineers. We design and run in-house developer agents and AI-first tooling, and we integrate them deeply across Uber's monorepos (Go, Java, Python, web, and mobile) and its engineering ecosystem. Our goal: help teams across the company ship code at scale with more speed, better quality, and less toil.

What we own today:

  • AIFX CLI & agent harness layer: a single way for engineers to install, configure, and run AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and others) with consistent settings, plugins, skills, and MCP servers across laptops, devpods, and CI.
  • Background coding agents (Minion): a platform that runs autonomous coding tasks at scale, from bug fixes and migrations to CI repair, and turns them into reviewable pull requests.
  • AI code review (uReview): LLM-powered review on code changes across Uber's monorepos, with team-level customization.
  • Agent governance & cost controls: model routing, spend caps, usage analytics, and evaluation, so that AI adoption stays reliable, secure, and cost-efficient.

We work closely with Developer Platform partners (CI, Submit Queue, DevPod, IDE), Michelangelo (ML platform), Security, and product engineering teams. We also work with frontier model providers. Our team has presented its work externally at multiple conferences, including at DPE Summit.

What the Candidate Will Do
  • Set technical direction for the AIFX software factory: lead the evolution of a software factory where durable, multi-day agent workflows orchestrate planning, coding, review, and verification to turn a spec into a verified, landable change.
  • Define the future of AI in Uber's SDLC: drive the long-term vision for how engineering at Uber works with AI agents, from planning and coding to review, verification, and release, and align Developer Platform and Engineering leadership behind it.
  • Shape the wider Uber AI ecosystem: partner with platform and product engineering orgs across Uber so AI agents work across every codebase and workflow, and set the standards other teams build on.
  • Lead the hardest problems hands-on: prototype, design, and ship critical components, and set the bar for evaluation, reliability, and cost across AIFX systems.
  • Grow technical leaders: mentor senior engineers and tech leads, run design reviews, and represent Uber's AI developer platform with industry partners, model providers, and the external engineering community.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including building and operating large-scale backend services or developer platforms in production.
  • Proficiency in at least one major programming language (e.g., Go, Java, Python, or TypeScript).
  • Experience setting technical direction for multi-team or org-wide projects through all stages: inception, stakeholder alignment, implementation, and operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Track record of shipping LLM-powered agents or developer tools to production at scale, and of defining how they are evaluated (golden datasets, LLM-as-judge, online experiments).
  • Deep experience with agent harnesses and protocols (Claude Code / Claude Agent SDK, Codex, OpenCode, MCP) and with workflow orchestration or durable execution systems (e.g., Cadence, Temporal).
  • Experience defining multi-year technical strategy for developer infrastructure (build, CI/CD, code review, large monorepos) and earning buy-in across orgs and leadership.
  • Recognized technical leadership beyond your team: mentoring senior engineers and representing your org in the broader technical community (talks, open source, publications).
