Perception Interns will experiment with and evaluate machine learning solutions for onboard and offboard drone perception. They will train models using large real-world, simulated, and internet-scale datasets; write production code for model training, validation, and integration; research novel perception methods; optimize models for deployment; and collaborate with planning, navigation, mapping, and hardware teams.

Develop and own features for Zipline’s consumer mobile and web applications, using React Native, Python, and Go. Interns will collaborate cross-functionally on customer-focused features, contribute to technical roadmaps and engineering practices, and work across design, deployment, and iteration. This is a full-time, in-person internship in South San Francisco from January through April 2027.

Design and deploy perception algorithms for autonomous aircraft and obstacle detection, localization, and tracking. Build machine learning training pipelines, evaluation frameworks, debugging tools, and visualization systems. Collaborate with systems, flight-test, and validation teams to improve safety-critical detect-and-avoid capabilities. Apply deep learning, geometric computer vision, simulation, and real-world operational feedback to improve accuracy, latency, and robustness in complex environments.

Develop and test autonomous flight-control algorithms, simulations, analysis tools, and onboard integrity tests. Analyze flight data for regressions and improvements, assess vehicle performance and safety, and present results to engineering teams. The internship involves embedded software, technical computing, hardware interaction, and real-world aircraft systems at Zipline’s South San Francisco or Dallas offices.

Supports the Flight Controls team by designing, implementing, testing, and releasing flight-control algorithms for autonomous aircraft. Develops simulation, controls analysis, integrity-testing, and regression-protection tools; analyzes flight data for performance improvements; evaluates safety and reliability; and presents engineering results.

Supports deployment of drone ground systems by developing, testing, and deploying application-specific engineering solutions. Evaluates and integrates commercial products, develops specialized equipment such as lifting apparatus and weather stations, manages vendors, refines site requirements, and creates handover processes for sustaining operations. The role involves troubleshooting hardware and software, analyzing data, collaborating cross-functionally, and performing hands-on testing at outdoor sites.

Develop and own hardware test assets for drone systems, from requirements and implementation through validation, data collection, troubleshooting, analysis, and engineering recommendations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to test circuit boards, avionics, sensors, power systems, mechanical assemblies, and integrated subsystems. Build mechatronic systems and automation scripts, streamline testing and reporting, and ensure component performance, reliability, and safety.

Lead supplier industrialization for PCBA and top-level assemblies, including DFM, supplier selection and audits, process validation, quality improvement, capacity planning, SCARs, SPC, NPI support, and automated testing. Partner with engineering, supply chain, contract manufacturers, and manufacturing teams to improve yield, efficiency, and defect reduction while ensuring IPC, ISO, automotive, and aerospace standards compliance. The role is based in South San Francisco and requires 30–40% global travel.

Design, prototype, test, and validate electrical systems for autonomous drone delivery platforms. Projects may include battery charging electronics, ground-support electronics, production test equipment, avionics validation, reliability testing, and root-cause investigations. Collaborate with mechanical, embedded, software, systems, manufacturing, and operations teams to develop reliable solutions for real-world deployment.

Supports aerospace vehicle design through aerodynamic, propulsion, and power-system analysis; develops subsystem models and aerodynamic databases; plans and analyzes wind-tunnel and flight-test experiments; and collaborates with multidisciplinary engineering teams. The internship provides hands-on experience using analytical calculations, CFD simulations, experimental testing, data analysis, and aircraft design tools.
